HUSS 125 – Family Theory and Services Week 4 – Report This assessment is worth 10% of your grade Deadline Due by the end of Week 4 at 11:59 pm, ET. Outcomes Completing this activity will help you meet the following: Course Outcome Compare and contrast the diverse types of family structures and how cultural factors can influence these dynamics. Directions This week you will complete a report consisting of a narrative at least 500 words in length and a corresponding table. In this report you will examine some of the diverse family structures seen in the United States today and explore the effects of culture (including race and ethnicity) on these family structures. In completing the table and accompanying narrative, the information and links provided in the Week 1 lecture will be particularly helpful. You may also conduct your own research using outside scholarly sources if you wish. Make sure to cite any references used. To begin, fill in the table template provided in Appendix A of this document (starting on page 5). Bullet points are provided to help you organize your table. Each row of the table represents a different family structure that is common in the United States today. The first row of the table has been completed for you as an example. For each of the remaining rows, please do the following within the table (in your own words): Briefly define and describe the family structure. o In your description, make sure to detail any important identifying characteristics of the family strucuture. o In your description, try to focus on what helps to differentiate this particular family structure from the other family structures listed in the table. Summarize the effects of culture (including race and ethnicity) on the frequency or prevalance of the family strucuture.
HUSS125 – Report 2 o For example, in Week 1 lecture, you learned that Asian children are statistically less likely to be part of a blended family. This is one effect of culture that could be listed for remarriage/blended families. o If you cannot find information (in lecture or through your own research) on the effects of race/ethnicity on a particular family structure, you might try thinking about culture more broadly. As you saw in Week 1 lecture, culture affects what people think is acceptable or normal. Consider how shifts in attitudes and other changes within the larger American society might impact the prevalence of the listed family structure. For example, attitudes towards divorce have become more favorable/accepting in the United States. This cultural change might have an effect on the number of nuclear families in the country. Once you have completed the table, write a narrative at least 500 words in length in which you compare and contrast the family structures summarized in your table and detail the effects of culture on the various family structures. A template for the organization of your narrative is provided below the table in Appendix A of this document (beginning on page 5).
HUSS125 – Report 3 HUSS 125 – Report Grading Rubric Criteria Excellent Average Needs Improvement Points Table Content 45 points 38 - 45 points Entire table is completed with correct details in every cell. For each listed family structure, an accurate definition/description is provided and some of the possible effects of culture are identified. 30 - 37 points The majority of cells in the table are completed with correct details. Mostly accurate information is provided to define/describe each listed family structure and the effects of culture on that structure. However, certain cells would benefit from additional detail and/or clarity. 0 - 29 points Few of the cells in the chart are filled in accurately, cells are filled in completely, but details are inaccurate, or table is left blank. Narrative 45 points 38 - 45 points The narrative fully describes key similarities/difference s between the family structures, as well as identifying some themes related to the effects of culture. The narrative is well reasoned, offers supporting details, and exemplifies higher-level thinking. 30 - 37 points The narrative briefly describes key similarities/difference s between the family structures, as well as themes related to the effects of culture. However, some supporting details or examples are lacking. Parts of the analysis show evidence of higher-level thinking and a basic understanding of the family structures. 0 – 29 points The narrative is incomplete, lacking significant detail, or contains irrelevant or inaccurate information on key similarities/difference s between the family structures and/or the effects of culture on family structures. Grammar and Spelling 10 points 9 - 10 points The visual organization of information in the cells of the table is easy to follow, with spaces or bullet points separating details. The written narrative follows a logical and clear pattern of development. There are 3 or fewer errors 7 - 8 points The visual organization of information in the cells in the table can be followed with minimal difficulty. Some attempt is made to separate details in each cell. Most of the written narrative follows a logical and clear pattern of development. There are minimal errors (4- 0 - 6 points The visual organization of information in the cells in the table is difficult to follow. No attempt is made to separate details in each cell. The written narrative does not follow a logical and clear pattern of development. The organization of the
