Kenny Jones SPT 501 Milestone Three Research Design Draft Design and Methodology During the course of developing and choosing the appropriate design and methodology for investigating the following research question posed on why athletes continue to use drugs whether legal, illegal or performance enhancing within sports? I strongly felt that the broad question is one that deserves a more appropriate approach in investigating by  utilizing resources such as surveys, interviews, and data obtained from research. The overall research design is a plan to answer the research question as best as possible and during this time, the need to utilize interviews would serve as the best method moving forward. In doing so, this can allow me to be more hands on with my approach especially in regards to getting an athletes point of view of those who have used performance enhancing and or illegal drugs while partaking in their respectable sport. During the interview different questions will address different angles of the overall research question. This approach just as any other has its underlying strengths, as well as it’s weaknesses, however, the intended design and methodology approach will serve its general purpose. An interview is a qualitative research method that relies on asking questions in order to collect data. Collectively there are (3) phases associated with a
research interview. Phase 1: Ensuring interview questions align with research questions, Phase 2: Constructing an inquiry-based conversation, Phase 3: Receiving feedback. Strength and Weaknesses Conducting interviews has its strengths and weaknesses associated with the intended research and design methodology. When we think of some of the more positive strengths we can strongly consider how it gives me the research ample opportunity to obtain original data from the athletes in which are being interviewed. During this time, I can obtain original and unique data directly from the sources. This fast and efficient method will also yield results and data quickly by producing reliable results as interviews provide better responses oppose to utilizing methodologies such as surveys and or questionnaires. By utilizing this approach it also allows me to build rapport with the subject that I connect with. Building a positive rapport can yield more direct answers as I would allow me to be actively engaged and asking direct but not too intrusive type of questioning but more engaging questioning as it would allow the subjects to answer clear and concisely. When gathering answers I can then see the connections made between subjects to further understand their perspective on the “why” aspect of the original question posed. There are many interview techniques that can be utilized that involve but are not limited to the following : Direct and Indirect interviews, structured and unstructured, and focus group interviews. Some of the more commonly associated weakness pertaining to the interview methodology would be the time, effort, energy and costs associated with conducting interviews. Some athletes may or may not want to be compensated for conducting interviews, however, the time, effort and energy may prove to be costly as well as it may prove to be a hassle to track a number of athletes that have been associated with violating league policies regarding substance and drug abuse.
Some athletes may not want to come to the forefront to disclose matters on what they have been using the substance as the fear of tarnishing their image further may be heavily considered. Some of the more weakness associated with conducting interviews would be the biases that may be formed and how interview studies may lead to a high number of refusals. The number of refusals will be determined based off of the overall topic and questions associated with the interview process. This may in turn lead athletes to not participate in the process collectively especially if the interview proves to not be anonymous.  Strategies Explained Outside of conducting interviews some of the more common strategies that will be used to gather research and data effectively respectfully would be surveys, data collection through questionnaires and observations. Each of these unique strategies will serve their purpose on how and what type of data will be collected. Overall, the intent of each strategy would be to inform readers on all of the important factors gathered during the different processes. Interviews would be effective as it gives me opportunity to be more hands on with athletes that are being interviewed. Surveys allow me to understand the characteristics of a large population. Through data collection the effectiveness would be through gathering reliable data to analyze as questionnaires effectiveness is centered around measuring subject behavior, preferences, intentions and attitudes. The effectiveness of conducting observations allows me to understand the “why” or how something occurs within a natural setting.  Resources
