Ben Donnelly GEB 4890 Drewes Prelection Paper 1. What is service learning and social responsibility to you? To me service learning is where I take the skills, I have learned through my life whether that includes school, jobs, or my parents, and I apply them to service. Being able to take my skills to these services can help me increase efficiency and help more people and the community at a greater impact. Service learning is also being able to teach others what you have learned through your own experience during service. Overall, you apply your own skills when you volunteer, and you get a whole new skill setback as well on things that you didn’t know in the first place. Social Responsibility to me is when you have the inner desire to give back and help your community become greater as a whole. Whether that is picking up trash, or helping feed the homeless You realize that your own actions have a greater impact on everyone around you, and that you really can make a change in this community and in this world. 2. Which service organization did you select, and who is your contact (Name, title, address, and phone)? The service organization that I am selecting is called the humane society of Tampa Bay. This is an organization that helps with dogs that are being rescued. This deals

with animals in shelters and they need people to help maintain them and keep them in good condition. My contact is Chris Madalena. His cell is 8132917357, and he is the volunteer manager of the whole operation. 3. Why did you select this service organization and what needs within the community does the organization serve? I selected this organization because I love animals and dogs especially so much. The one thing that always ticks away and pulls at my heart is that there are innocent animals out there that are suffering. I believe that every dog deserves a good home because they are such kind and loving creatures. The fact that they have to go through so much pain just to live is sad. I also selected this service because I want to get better at being able to take care of dogs and train them so one day when I get a dog of my own, I will be able to take care of him and raise him properly to be a good happy dog. The organization’s point in the community is to help animals that are suffering in the streets or the wild. This is how they help with medical services “ The Animal Hospital (Animal Health Center) at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay was opened in 2012 to provide our community with affordable options in the care of their pets. The full- service, high-quality hospital can accommodate medical care ranging from routine vaccinations and health checks to diagnostics and special surgeries.” They are here to help the animals in need that are sick and have no one else to turn to. This community takes in injured weak, and sick dogs and helps heal them and nurture them. When they are feeling better, they then put them up for adoption where these dogs will hopefully find a loving family where they will be treated correctly for the years to

come. Without a humane society there would be so many dogs that suffer and other animals that suffer. These kind creatures really do deserve a good home and family where they can just live. Another big thing that the humane society does as well is lost and found work. A lot of the dogs that go missing or that humane society finds are dogs that are lost, and their owners can’t find them. The community then gets the dogs that are already assigned an owner back to them properly. This is how they do it “ Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center (HCPRC) is the county-designated shelter where stray/lost animals are held so their owners can find them. However, they allow us to accept and hold strays if we have space available.” Another big act that humane society does is medical treatments when it comes to these animals. So, when things like neutering need to happen, they have volunteers that can help your animals with this. They do countless other surgeries as well like putting acts on your animal if they injure one of their limbs. One of the last things they do is offer pet insurance for their pet fi they were to get seriously injured and they didn’t have the medical team to solve it. This is what the humane society said their mission is “ The Humane Society of Tampa Bay is dedicated to ending animal homelessness and providing care and comfort for companion animals in need.” 4. What other groups/individuals/communities (if any) could benefit from the types of services provided by this organization? I feel like every group individual and community is impacted and affected by this cause in such a positive way. The worst feeling is driving around your neighborhood and you see a dog that is sick and is suffering. Humane society allows us to get these

These animals are brought back to life, healthy, and given all their shots. The Humane society is brining families back together by getting you a new loved one who can play with your kids, a Nd help guard your house at night. 5. Does the organization have a mission and/or vision statement and if so, what is it? The organizations mission statement is “ The Humane Society of Tampa Bay is dedicated to ending animal homelessness and providing care and comfort for companion animals in need .” 6. What do you think you might learn from this project? What specific business expertise do you anticipate contributing/developing within the service organization? From this project I am going to learn a ton about how a nonprofit organization runs and operates. I am going to also be able to learn the process f how dogs get rescued in the first place, a Nd what we need to do to ace them feel comfortable and help them get back to good health.
