Module One Question 1 Do you have any healthy habits? What role have culture and environment played in the healthy or unhealthy habits that you have formed? Mostly I try to exercise and let my problems go. While I’m not too concerned on whether it increases my life expectancy, I do believe that it does enrich it. I've seen too many people be lazy or stressed and allowed life to slip by to want that for myself, and while I’m unsure if that's due to culture, it is due to the environment around me. Module One Question 2 Choose a society from the map. Within that society, characterize one of the social science principles we identified in this learning block. As a reminder, the social science principles we focus on in this course are: social roles, social institutions, social norms, and beliefs and values. For example, what is a social role that exists in Okinawa? Who occupies this role? In Greece, the social norms differ quite a bit from here, such as everyone knowing each other or a neighbor disciplining your child. The social norms here seem to have the entire community involved and helping in each other’s lives. Module One Question 3 Provide an example of the environment influencing the population in an area of increased longevity. Then provide an example of the population in that area influencing its environment. In Ikaria, The high winds and natural barriers have led to no port or trade for much of their history, leading to self-sufficiency and a more relaxed lifestyle. This in turn keeps their island from being over ran by tourism, making it so there's a healthy balance between people and necessities. Module One Question 4 Think about factors affecting your lifestyle in comparison to the areas of increased longevity. Characterize two social science principles in your day-to-day life. Use the two principles that you did not describe in response to the earlier question. For example, you could describe some social norms in your day-to-day life.
Social Institutions seem to be much less prevalent on Ikaria, with a big emphasis being placed on the family institution, rather than one relied on here, such as government. This also leads to a bit of a difference in social roles being able to more relaxed and intrusive into their fellow islanders lifestyles, such as napping more frequently, not having a set schedule, and stepping in to help raise each other children. Module One Question 5 From a social science perspective, what are three factors that shape your day-to-day life? For example, you could describe some factors that influence your social interactions, your access to certain foods, your day-to-day activities, the pace of life in your area, etc. The ease at which unhealthy foods can be obtained are a huge factor in how my life is shaped, making it so staying healthy can be somewhat challenging. The difficulty of it probably wouldn't be such a factor if it didn't seem like my life here wasn't limited by a monetary value, making it so my time seems more valuable trying to earn money than worry about healthy substitutes. Also being male in the society I’ve grown up in has made me feel useless if I'm unable to provide for those I care about, making it feel as though asking for help is failing the role I’ve been given. Module One Question 6 Identify two social science issues related to war. One issue is gender inequality, some culture place different values on people based on sex, other feel as though there shouldn't be a divide on things one can’t change, this leads to disagreements resulting in conflict. Another could be immigration, feeling as though you should or shouldn't allow people sanctuary based on trials or conflicts of their homeland, leading to conflicts in the place immigrated to. Module One Question 7 Identify two social science issues related to education. Children from low income families have a lack of resources for a high quality education, leading to more of an achievement gap between the classes. Another problem is religious or political beliefs being implemented in school, alienating or even shaming any child from a household or culture that doesn't share those feelings.
Module One Question 8 Recall: what are the five social institutions that we are examining in this course? Government, family, religion, economy, and education are the five institutions. Module One Question 9 Identify the social institutions discussed in this reading about India. All five of the social institutions, government, religion, education, economy, and family are discussed in the reading above. Module One Question 10 Choose one of the five social institutions. Describe some of the factors that have influenced this social institution in India. The economy in India has been heavily influenced by the education system in India. Enrollment in English schools has led to many more "white-collar" career options for students partially leading to a cultural shift and growth of the economy. Module One Question 11 Use the reading about social institutions in India to identify two social science issues that could be researched further. One things that could be looked into much more is how the growth of white-collar job opportunities from the English schools has affected the Indian economy in a positive or negative way. Another one you could spend much more time on is how the cultural shift taking place is affecting the traditional family structure with the elders being held in such high regards.

Module One Question 12 Describe two social norms in Dubai noted in the reading and explain how these social norms may differ from those of the culture that you grew up in. Dubai having religion be very entwined in people’s lives effects the work week, making it start and end at different times, and seeing many people stop in the middle of the day five times a day to pray is a bit odd to someone never being raised into any religion. With cell phones being such a big part of life, photos happen very frequently and it’s odd to hear of a place where they don't typically even display their photos. Module One Question 13 What factors shape the social norms in Dubai? Name at least two, and describe how they shape the social norms. Islamic law is hugely entwined with religion, making it so a lot of behavior is based on that religion due to the law, shaping the norms people tend to participate in. The economy being very heavily reliant on trade with the western world has begun to change some social norms such as the way people there dress more for business and less traditionally now. Module One Question 14 What factors influence your society's social norms? Name at least two social norms that exist in your culture, and describe the factors that influence them. The government not being based completely on one religion allows for more of a mix of ideas and it’s more normal to practice religion in a secluded place, or place of worship. The value placed on equality also keeps any one religion or group from becoming too prevalent or powerful in society. Module One Question 15 Based on the reading about Dubai, identify two social science issues that could be researched further. One is how there laws being based heavily on religion caused it to remain so prevalent to this
day. Another is how the mixing of business done with west is affecting the norms that have been practiced for many years due to the governing views. Module One Question 16 Now choose a social science issue listed above, or pick one of your own. Adopt the social science perspective to ask a question about this issue from the point of view of a psychologist. What is a question that a psychologist might have about this social science issue? Has the introduction of social norms from other countries due to business in the west lead to an increase or decrease in the value placed on traditional norms by the individual in Dubai? Module One Question 17 Now choose a social science issue listed above, or pick one of your own. Adopt the social science perspective to ask a question about this issue from the point of view of a sociologist. What is a question that a sociologist might have about this issue? Has the city of Dubai been determined in terms of growth and trade, due to the governing body still following Islamic law? Module One Question 18 Now choose a social science issue listed above, or pick one of your own. Adopt the social science perspective to ask a question about this issue from the point of view of an anthropologist. What is a question that an anthropologist might have about this issue? How was Dubai's religious beliefs been shaped by Saudi Arabia's most popular religion since its founding? Module One Question 19 Who occupies the social role of spiritual leader in most Papua New Guinean kinship groups?
The Big man occupies that role. Module One Question 20 What are the societal expectations for a woman's social role in Papua New Guinea? What influences these expectations? Women's societal expectations are to cook, garden, tend to livestock and teach young girls. These expectations depend on their role in the family whether they are a mother, daughter or elder Module One Question 21 Within your own society, what social roles do you occupy? What other social roles could you occupy, if you chose to? How much choice does your society give you to occupy different social roles? How much flexibility do you have to fill that social role differently than society expects? Mostly I just occupy the roles of brother and son. I look forward to getting to occupy the roles of husband and father. I believe my society allows me to occupy any roles I chose and there aren't any limits to what roles I can take on.
