Chapter 3 – Homework Questions Traditional Policing 1. Explain the theory of Traditional Policing. Does this approach affect crime rates? Answer: The theory of Traditional Policing is more related to deterrence theory. It assumes that anyone can change their minds about committing a crime if there is a threat of serious sanctions or apprehensions. This approach is an effective crime reduction because of how it presumably influences the decision-making of people also including criminals. 2. What was the Violent Crime Control Act of 1994 and what did it do? Answer: The Violent Control Act of 1994 was a federal legislation that created the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services in the U.S. Justice Department which was created by former president Bill Clinton and signed in September 1994. This act was used to permit the use of $8.8 billion to fund local law enforcement agencies in the fight against crime and to help improve their community policing capabilities.
3. What is reactive policing? Answer: Reactive policing is a practice of solely responding to calls of service. It is the exact opposite of proactive policing. 4. What are the controversies in private policing? Answer: Some controversies in private policing is: 1. Private policing is but one part of a larger privatization movement in criminal justice. 2. Some people have charged that private policing is poised to replace public policing, such as a change which is rare to happen. 3. Significant controversies associated with private policing is constitutional, this Is because they are nongovernmental, and they don’t have the same legal requirements as public police officers. 4. The biggest controversy in private policing is efficacy, such as do “private police work better than public police officers”? It is in fact too hard to say if private or public policing are effective because whoever works best, crime shouldn’t happen.
