Chapter 1 – Homework Questions Identifying and Evaluating Crime Control 1. Explain the difference between hard science and soft science. Answer: The difference between science and soft science is that hard science is about biology, chemistry and physics and they only conduct their research in controlled laboratories. Soft Sciences are the study of social phenomena in natural settings which include CJ, and sociology. This type of science conducts their research outside of a laboratory where there is no control of what can happen. 2. Explain the difference between diffusion and displacement. Answer: The difference between diffusion and displacement is that diffusion is the term for reducing crime only in targeted and surrounding areas. Displacement is a certain method of crime control which leads to short term reductions, and it ends up pushing major problems to neighborhoods. 3. What causes criminal law to continue to expand? Answer: What causes criminal law to expand is because conduct is now being termed as criminal. 4. ______________is used during this course to address the crime problem, rather than “policy.” Answer: Approaches
5. Why is it important to strike a balance between over-specifying versus vagueness when defining a crime problem? Answer: It is important to strike a balance between over-specifying versus vagueness when defining a crime problem because it is better to be overly specific about a criminal act and with that we can come up with different solutions to the crime. But then again being too specific to a crime can make it seem as if it doesn’t have much credibility or lead to biases. There needs to at least be a better way at handling crime problems.
