2 6-1 Presentation Progress Check 6-1 Presentation Progress Check In today’s modern society, we are bombarded by ads for the next “must-play” video game. So, you download and spend a few hours staving off boredom playing; maybe you will play more, or maybe you will not touch the game again. The average gamer plays for about 6 hours every week, with 97% of boys and 83% of girls playing at least one video game on at least one device (Bezrutczyk, 2023). While some find it easy, others may find themselves consumed by video games, to the extent that it takes over their lives. Some individuals may use gaming to escape from reality, completely losing themselves in the virtual world. On the other hand, others may spend significant amounts of money in pursuit of collecting their favorite in-game characters. The question arises: is video game addiction more likely to develop using coping mechanisms or through reinforcement within the game itself? Furthermore, what aspects of each type of addiction render it detrimental to a person's health? The World Health Organization (WHO) defines video game addiction or gaming disorder as a pattern of behavior characterized by impaired control over gaming, an increasing priority given to gaming over other activities to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other interests and daily activities, and continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences (WHO Headquarters (HQ) 2020). This indicates that video game reinforcement has not yet been officially recognized as a part of video game addiction. If mentioned at all, it is often referred to as a gambling addiction. However, it really should be

Serious players of Devsisters games, in addition to sinking hours of their time into a game to earn in-game currency, are more willing to spend absurd amounts of real-world money for the chance to earn in-game characters in what is supposed to be a free-to- play game. This is less about being addicted to a game for the sake of escapism and more about being addicted to the need to have their favorite character and the euphoria felt when earned. So why is it important to study video game addiction? Video games can provide an opportunity to escape reality and real-world stresses. But for many, the video game becomes their social life and a pillar of self-esteem. For those still developing brains, addiction to video games can stunt the growth of mature social skills and emotional development. It is not only important to study how this addiction can affect social development, but also how it can lead to a person sinking entire days as well as entire paychecks for what is quite literally a pixelated character. Parents, imagine buying your child an online game, only for them to lose interest in interacting with the rest of the family, their friends, and their education after a few days. Imagine how you would feel if, when asked to turn the game off, your child lashes out at you in anger. What could you do? Currently, there is no scientific consensus on when video game overuse becomes an addiction, or if this is even possible. The American Psychiatric Association has classified “Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD)” as an unverified potential diagnosis that requires further review (Bezrutczyk, 2023). Children can easily develop unhealthy habits and routines if they lack a balanced play environment. Adults, particularly those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), are deemed to be at a higher risk of developing video game addiction (Mathews, 2019). Parents should teach their children from a young age about screen

4 6-1 Presentation Progress Check time moderation. For older players, using video games to cope with stress and anxiety may be a key factor in video game addiction. One study found that using video games as a means of coping (Plante, 2019). Parents, imagine your child downloads the latest free-to-play game on their phone or gets a popular multiplayer cooperative game for their console. A few weeks later, you open your bank or credit card statement to find numerous in-game purchase (microtransaction) charges totaling hundreds or even thousands of dollars. This could stem from an intense desire to overcome "THE WALL." The wall represents a point in the game where a player must either pay to acquire necessary items to progress or invest significant time farming for them, as referred to in the gaming community. In recent years, Devsisters has excelled in implementing this mechanism. But if a player is content to farm to surpass “THE WALL”, how do game companies entice them to spend money? Often, it involves paying for items through random loot boxes, enticing players with the thrill of anticipation, flashing lights, and triumphant sounds upon opening. (MacPhee, 2020). In conclusion, it is important to understand that the amount of time someone spends playing a video game does not necessarily indicate addiction. A person could spend many hours playing a video game just because they enjoy it, and only when a person is unable to stop, even though they know they should, should addiction be considered. Those with ADHD should be increasingly cautious, as increased levels of symptoms have been positively associated with increased addiction severity (Mathews, 2019). In terms of microtransactions, some states have attempted to introduce bills to restrict the sale of games and compel developers to disclose various information to consumers, such as the

Be cautious; teach children to be cautious of a game's monetization system, and parents should consider placing restrictions on microtransactions if such restrictions are available. Regardless of the form, once addiction has been recognized and acknowledged, the first step to ending video game addiction is to stop playing the game.
