Reflective Assignment 2 Group (6) Centennial College Course Name & Number: Gned500-915 Professor: Assignment Due Date: 4th February 2023 Done by:
Reflective Assignment #2 Assignment Template (500 words – to be completed as a group) 1. As a group, what do your reflections have in common and where do they differ? Reading our group members’ reflections, we found similarities and differences. The similarities that we found: All four of us acknowledge the significant impact of social institutions on shaping our identities, family, school, workplace and media are mentioned as influential forces. Kamalpreet, Zein, and Iman express concerns related to global citizenship. Kamalpreet discusses climate change, Zein addresses environmental sustainability and multiculturalism, and Iman is committed to dispelling myths about Islam internationally. Erika, Kamalpreet, and Zein connect their identities to broader global issues. Erika mentions her identity as a Colombian in the context of globalization, Kamalpreet discusses climate change as a global concern, and Zein, as an immigrant to Canada, aligns his identity with global citizenship. Both Iman and Zein emphasize the role of cultural and religious beliefs in shaping their identities. Iman discusses the impact of Islamic beliefs and traditions, while Zein highlights the role of religious beliefs in defining his values and worldview. The differences that we found: The impact that social institutions have affected the way that all four of us think critically, and how different opinions we have about beliefs. Zein and Iman explain how religion is a key role in their identity, Kamalpreet expresses her philosophical ideas about empathy and equity in society and Erika has a position that criticizes the beliefs that she grew up with. Iman and Zein adapt and exemplify their faith and values in their life, family, and environment. Meanwhile, Kamalpreet is learning how her beliefs are changing her perspective and identity. 2. Identify 3 social issues that your group believes are important. i. Affordable housing (raise rent) ii. Indigenous Right iii. Climate Change 3. As a group, why do you think each issue matters?
i. Affordable housing: it is a current issue for the Canadian community. It increases poverty because it is not affordable if it is compared with Canadian’s income. People with lower incomes can’t afford it. Raising rent makes it harder for them to find and keep affordable homes. ii. Indigenous Rights: They don’t have their legal rights to their land. They face discrimination in everyday life. Respecting Indigenous rights in Canada makes up for past mistakes and helps Indigenous people have better lives. It also makes Canada a fairer and more welcoming place for everyone by valuing Indigenous cultures. iii. Climate Change: It affects Canada faster and twice than the rest of the world, especially in the northern territories close to the sea-ice pole. Climate change in Canada brings dangerous weather and hurts jobs like farming. It affects people by making things less safe and stable. Explain in a short paragraph why each issue resonates with you and your group members. 1. Affordable housing crisis: All our groups have this issue because of the rise that is happening these days. Income levels contribute to the affordability crisis. As wages fail to keep pace with rising housing costs, individuals and families find it challenging to allocate a reasonable portion of their income to housing expenses. 2. Indigenous Rights: All our groups agree that Indigenous people have the right to their land and the legal law in the country. Individual rights of citizens will retain their meaning. This includes the right to live on ancestral lands, protect sacred sites, and speak and teach indigenous languages and cultures. 3. Climate Change: All our group agrees that climate change seems very dangerous whether changing or showing many signs of disaster. For example, floods, earthquakes etc. , We agreed as group members that, the affordable housing crisis is a big deal for us because it takes up over 45% of our income, leaving less time for family due to the need to work more. We want a better balance for our family life. The Indigenous rights resonate with us because we want fairness for all, and we see the importance of recognizing Indigenous rights to make Canada a more equal place. Climate change issue is important to us because we care about our environment and want to make sure our country is safe from climate-related problems. We also want fairness and a strong economy for everyone.
