Peer Review/Feedback Student Presenters: Jarlin Baez, Claudia Miranda, and Katerina Sodano Topic: Racial Disparities in Breast Cancer What central message was most compelling? The central message that was most compelling is that women of colors are shown to have more extensive negative effects, in particular black women. Breast cancer is a type of cancer that originates in the ducts/lobes of the breasts. Some of these aggressive negative effects that are seen in minority groups include death, aggressive forms of cancer, and lower quality of life. The mortality rate among black women is 40% higher compared to women from other ethnic groups. Only 78% of Black women with breast cancer live at least up to 5 years after diagnosis while in White women the rate is 88%. What did you find most interesting/surprising about this presentation? I was quite surprised to learn that breast cancer can occur in men. I thought that this form of cancer is only exclusive in women. It was quite mind blowing to learn that men are also at risk for breast cancer, although they are at a significantly lower risk. About less than 1% of breast cancer cases occur in men. I am curious to learn if breast cancer cases in men also disproportionately affect different ethnicities like in women. What question(s) do you have about this presentation? 1. Does hormone therapy or other treatments influence the chances of one getting breast cancer in individuals who are transitioning? 2. How much does insurance cover the cost of breast cancer? 3. What factors contribute to the high cases of breast cancer in black women versus women of other ethnicities? 4. Does physician discrimination and mistreatment play a role in this situation? If so, how? 5. Are there any environmental factors or trends that explain as to the high number of cases that are seen in Black women?
What is your recommendation for developing an intervention program based on the information provided? Based on the information provided my recommendation for developing an intervention program is to have intervention programs available at college campuses. I think education is the best way to help reduce the rate of breast cancer cases, and help individuals deal with this situation better if they are diagnosed with breast cancer. It is important to monitor at a young age and take good care of our health so that we can do everything in our power to reduce the risk. Identifying the lifestyle factors that contribute to increased risk will allow women to be more mindful about the decisions they choose to make. Additionally, I feel at this age such information tends to stick with people better, and they carry on to the lessons and values they take away from college and apply it to the rest of their adult lives.
