2 Assignment #7 Shaken Baby Syndrome It is essential for every social worker who interacts with children to be able to identify the signs of shaken baby syndrome (SBS). It is the responsibility of the social worker to monitor the child and their surroundings for any indications of maltreatment or neglect. Shaking the head forcefully may cause a variety of neurological symptoms, including seizure activity, a decreased level of consciousness, weariness, and irritation, to name just a few of them. When there is no evident exterior damage and the injury is to the head or neck, subdural or subarachnoid hemorrhages are especially concerning since they may occur in these areas. The development of retinal hemorrhages is yet another essential sign that may point to the presence of SBS. This is particularly the case if the hemorrhages impact both eyes and there is no clear explanation for why they are occurring. The social worker should also take note of any inconsistencies in the caregivers' accounts of how the kid was injured or how long it took them to disclose the incident. These details should be reported to the appropriate authorities. Mistrust may also result from multiple caregivers providing narratives of the events surrounding the injury that are contradictory or inconsistent with one another. It is also very important to keep a close eye on the behavior of the caregiver, as any indication of apathy, avoidance, or evasion in the face of the child's injuries should serve as a warning indicator. SBS has been linked to alterations in a child's behavior, including an increase in the frequency of weeping and withdrawal, as well as shifts in the child's feeding and sleeping routines. If the child's medical history reveals a pattern of prior injuries or unexplained hospitalizations, this may be an indicator that the child is currently being abused, especially if the injuries occurred in the recent past. There is an increased likelihood of child abuse when there is

3 stress experienced by caregivers, a lack of support within the family, or symptoms of domestic violence in the relationship between the parents. In addition to this, there may be reason for concern if a medical practitioner was not called upon to treat the kid's wounds as soon as they happened if the child was injured. It is essential to take careful notes on anything that could point to the child being abused or neglected in order to ensure that a comprehensive investigation can be carried out and that the youngster will remain safe. In the event that there are any warning indicators, the case worker is required to take immediate action and communicate their concerns to the appropriate authorities. This will help protect the child from further harm and provide the right assistance and intervention for the child as well as the family. It will also be beneficial for the child's future. Additionally, it will assist in protecting the child's right to personal privacy.
