1 4-2 Project Draft David Hernandez Southern New Hampshire University Linda Silva September 22, 2023
2 4-2 Project Draft Creating a cultural artifact is often driven by a deep emotional or intellectual connection to the subject matter. It serves to connect with others and promote understanding and empathy. In module two, I chose the 9/11 reflection pool memorials at the World Trade Center site in New York City. Michael Arad, the architect behind these memorials, witnessed the second plane hitting the South Tower from his Lower East Side rooftop (Gonzalez, 2018). This deeply affected him and influenced the design of the 9/11 memorial, which now stands as a powerful reminder of this tragic event. Through his artistic representation, Michael Arad captured the profound impact of 9/11 and united people in their collective remembrance. This artistic expression has influenced individuals who live close to the 9/11 memorial pools by providing a space for reflection and healing. The 2,983 victims of the terrorist attacks of 2001 and 1993 are remembered by having their names inscribed on the bronze parapets surrounding the two reflection pools ( About the Memorial , n.d.). The victims’ names encourage visitors to pause and think about the poor people who perished in these horrible occurrences. These pools provide a feeling of closure and healing for those personally impacted by the 9/11 tragedy. On the other hand, the day-to-day activities carried out by the people around the 9/11 reflection pools also influence the artistic representation of these pools. According to (Trusty, 2021), cleaning each pool requires a team of three men who spend eight hours scrubbing, vacuuming, and maintaining both pools five nights per week. Before the memorial is opened to the public, one of their duties is to place a white rose on top of each name of a victim whose birthday falls on that specific day. The memorials, therefore, are more than just static displays as they exemplify Americans’ shared beliefs and perspectives.
3 When examining the link between culture and expression, one may wonder: How does creative expression impact a society’s cultural identity? How do cultural beliefs and values influence the design of memorials related to death and mourning? Who has the authority to determine which cultural expressions receive funding or accurately represent a society? Additionally, one might question how the expressions of others influence personal values. For instance, How have the 9/11 memorial pools and the associated cultural values affected my perception and understanding of the event? And are my emotions and perspective towards this cultural work still relevant, despite not being directly affected by the tragedy, compared to those who were? To find answers, I would research how culture and expression interact. To achieve this, I may conduct interviews and surveys of individuals who have visited the memorial. I may also carefully examine the social and historical aspects surrounding the 9/11 catastrophe. To gain a greater insight into how my cultural origins and experiences have shaped my sense of values, I would seek to reflect on my internal perspective, solicit opinions, and engage in discussions with people from different cultural backgrounds. Moreover, I would broaden my research to examine the diverse ways that cultures manifest themselves, as this can provide valuable insights into how such expressions influence my expressions.
