Please review the following article: Doing Family Therapy as a New Social Worker: The Do's and Don'ts. While this article mentions family therapy, please consider the skills of a beginning Social Worker/Case Manager as you read this article. After reviewing this article, please consider the following in your discussion post: Please share your thoughts on how you can apply this information as a Social Worker. What do you think are some of the benefits/challenges in working with families? To receive full credit, you will need to post one substantial post. Each discussion post should be a minimum of 250 words or one page. Provide two substantial responses to your classmate’s posts. These responses should also be substantial and provide thoughtful reflection. Your initial discussion post should be posted by Wednesday and your two responses due by Sunday. The readings this week covered a lot of ground on the dos and don'ts in the social work world. As a social worker who is just starting out, I can apply the information provided to me by understanding a family's identity, respecting the current state of any family that I work with, and developing strategic treatment plans that will greatly benefit the family (Samudio, n.d.). I can also apply the information provided to me by understanding that a social worker cannot be a part of the disarray within a family, so creating a detailed treatment plan for each individual in the family will be helpful to stay clear of that (Samudio, n.d.). In order to develop a therapeutic relationship, the social worker will need to be on time to family sessions, actively listen, allow all clients to be heard and responded to, and it's also important to be flexible with the family's schedule (Samudio, n.d.). I think there are both benefits and challenges when it comes to working with families opposed to individuals. I think the benefits come from helping families create and meet goals, while helping create or re-create a healthy family dynamic. I think family therapy seem much more challenging than individual therapy, because you have to be able to assess and identify the problems within the family, while figuring out which family member is struggling with what. I also think in-home visits with families could
potentially be dangerous, depending on the reasoning behind the visit to begin with.
