2 Discussion In her book, “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness,” Michelle Alexander argues that the “War on drugs” is not a genuine pursuit for the course of making the world drug-free but a strategic social and political move meant to marginalize and control the African American communities (Alexander, 2010) . This, she argues, is a move to justify the selected application of the law by the criminal justice to arrest, prosecute, and imprison a vast chunk of African Americans for drug-related offenses. As a result of the “war on drugs” course, policymakers were allowed to adopt harsh policies that would lead to the arrest, prosecution, and imprisonment of a huge chunk of African Americans for drug-related offenses, a continuation of mass incarceration policies that had existed in the past. Michelle Alexander’s argument emphasizes that the war on drugs has been focusing on punitive measures that are not effective for the sake of punishing African Americans instead of taking an objective course that would address the root cause of the problem. The focus has been on prolonging the existing racial/social issues, a case that has always placed the minority races into drug-related problems (Alexander, 2010) . The measures implemented in the war on drugs have always been based on policies that disadvantage people of color by making them poor and incarcerating them for the sake of controlling them, just like the Jim Crow Laws. Had the war on drugs taken a genuine course, objectiveness and effectiveness in the strategy would be key in addressing the issue of drugs.
