ADDAMS’S CONTRIBUTION TO SOCIAL WORK 2 Social Work According to Jane Addams, the purpose of professional social work is to improve individuals' quality of life. Like any other profession, social work seeks to help people overcome some of the most difficult challenges in life. The difference between social work and other professions is its focus on the person-in-environment model and its emphasis on social justice (Närhi & Matthies, 2016).). Social worker considers both individual's internal struggles and examines people relationships, family structure, and community environment challenges. They come up with policies that help them identify ways to address the problems. Paths followed by Jane Addams to become a Social Worker Jane Addams was a revolutionary American social worker who was known for her progressive philanthropic efforts in the early 20th century in the United States. Notably, she was the first woman in America to win the Nobel peace prize. This lady is mostly known for founding the Hull house's settlement house, which later became an essential symbol of the progressive movement and social reform in the United States. Addams's interest in social work was prompted by her travels abroad. Addams with her friend Ellen Starr often traveled around Europe from December 1887 through the summer of 1888. What she learned and saw in Europe helped her develop her mission, which led to immense contributions to the world of social work. Jane followed her instincts and allowed herself to learn from different needy people before starting her work in the field of social work. Things that Addams learned from interacting and working with different people formed her backbone on modern social work. Being a self- taught scholar, Addams implemented the theories of other researchers who have addressed aspects of social work differently. She mostly expanded on the theories and ideas of John Dewy and William James (Shields, (2017).
ADDAMS’S CONTRIBUTION TO SOCIAL WORK 3 The Critical Contribution of Jane Addams in Social Work Addams is known for being an advocate for peace and women's rights worldwide. She was the first elected chair of the Women's Peace Party in January 1915. Later, she becomes president of the international congress of women. As an activist, Jane worked with different needy people at the ground level to bring change in the community. People remember Addams for her humanitarian work at the hull house, which later became a settlement house on the west side of Chicago (Shields, 2017). The inspiration behind building a hull house came after a trip to Europe. Influence of Addams's Study in Social Work Practice Addams's study of social work informs my practice of social work in various ways. First, to be a good and fruitful social worker, He or She should have the ability to work with people of all levels in the community, and they should be passionate about helping everyone. There are four components of good practice in social work; they include knowledge, values and ethics, the social work process, and appropriate skills. The social care Institute of excellent also provides guidance in social work and social care (Staub-Bernasconi, 2016). As a prospective social worker, I have learned a lot from Addams's study. The main lesson learned from the study is the commitment to social values. As a social worker, I have learned to stick to the laid social values while helping the vulnerable in the community.
