Cultural Competence Based on the unit readings, identify and describe a cultural group on the local, state, regional, national, or international level you are aware of. In social work, cultural competency means being aware of your own cultural beliefs and values and how these may be different from other cultures—including being able to learn about and honor the different cultures of those you work with (Levin-Keini & Shlomo, 2017). I got a keen interest in the culture of black men as stipulated in the article written by Stare and Fernando in 2019. The article reveals experiences attributed to the men’s perception such as helpful treatment factors, cognitive dissonance, and treatment barriers. It is also clear that Black American men are far more likely to seek care with unequal access to health care alluded to as the major contributor to the disparity. Referring to the NASW standards for cultural competence, what steps would you take to address issues of cultural competence? Standard 10 of the National Association of Social Workers (2020) deliberates on Leadership to Advance Cultural Competence. I would advocate for cultural competence by first learning about myself where I would explore my historic roots, beliefs, and values as stipulated by Levin-Keini and Shlomo (2017). Secondly, I will learn about different cultures to acclimatize to diversity. Consequently, I will interact with diverse groups and attend diversity-focused conferences to embrace firsthand experiences from different communities. Later, I will lobby for cultural sensitivity and competence in my department, agency, or organization. What steps would you take to address issues of cultural humility?
To address cultural humility, I will learn about cultural differences and be realistic with them to allow self-appraisal. This analogy will ensure there is no fight-back with my conscious as I partake in solving cultural issues. I will also show interest in other people’s experiences to gain firsthand information that will later influence my problem-solving skills from the particular cultural issue’s point of view. Lastly, I will show flexibility, humility, and courage to counter the wrath of cultural irregularities within the respective community. Reference Levin-Keini, N., & Shlomo, S. B. (2017).
