Amir Woods BLAS 102 - Black Theory & Social Change Dr. Love October 15, 2023 Black Studies: Examining the Difference between Negro and Black Scholarship In the paper, Nuanced Negro Studies: A Hare Perspective on the State and Nature of Black Studies Today, the authors make a distinction between the concepts of “Negro” and “Black” to discuss what contemporary Black Studies programs are focused on. Specifically, they suggest that many of these programs are more Nuanced Negro Studies than genuine Black Studies because they trace their lineage back to an earlier version which had been “derailed” away from its revolutionary origins (Dixon and Marcus 7). The authors argue that the original intent behind Black Studies was for it to be seen as distinct from the Civil Rights Movement in which Africans were labeled Negroes, opting instead for revolutionary change. In contrast to this, Negro scholarship does not promote revolution but rather seeks to establish Blacks within current conventions or institutions created by Whites while encouraging racial equality through sameness rather than difference. To illustrate this difference further, Daudi Azibo articulates his African worldview as an integral part of establishing authenticity in Black Studies which the authors consider. From Azibo's perspective, culture plays a fundamental role in understanding how we view reality and is key to distinguishing between Black vs. Negro scholarship within academic settings. Furthermore, recognizing how redefined terms such as “Black intelligentsia” have been hijacked to serve the interests of White supremacy is also essential (Azibo 69). By highlighting the differences between Negro and Black studies, these authors urge us to think critically about
how this state of affairs affects contemporary Black Studies programs and what implications it has on current scholarship. Therefore, by attempting to draw attention to the contrast between genuine and Nuanced Negro studies, this paper provides timely insight into both changing contexts for Black scholarship and fundamental distinctions in academic practices which can help inform our understandings of both past and current forms of discrimination. In this way, scholars may work towards creating new paths within Black Studies which celebrate African culture while remembering its roots in revolution.
