Jurisdictional As a police officer you may be assigned an area of the city that they want you to patrol. Being assigned to that area you will answer calls in that assigned area also. That does not mean you can not go to other areas of the city to assist other police officers in your department. You also may assist other police departments that have a suspect that has come into your area or if you have a suspect that goes into their area, they can assist you to get the suspect arrested. The map shows the eight different areas of Tyler Texas police department jurisdictions but the whole map is how a Tyler police officer can answer calls and arrest someone in the city of Tyler Texas. Some officers also may have to go to a different area if they are needed due to that officer having special training cases being a K-9 officer or being a swat officer.
Watchman Style of Policing A group of juveniles keeps vandalizing (graffiti) a local business building. The building landlord keeps calling the local police department to make a report of this vandalism every time this group of juveniles shows up at her building. The local police department sends an officer out to talk to the landlord. The officer talks to the landlord every time and asks how much it costs her every time these juveniles graffiti her building. The landlord replied that it cost me about $150 to $200 to get someone out here to clean it off my building. The officer then finds the juvenile group to try and scare the juveniles. "Officers use persuasion and threats or even “hassle" or "rough-up" disruptive people, instead of making the formal arrest." (Dempsey 2018) "This style is primarily concerned with order maintenance- maintaining order and controlling illegal and disruptive."(Dempsey 2018). The local police department has jurisdiction to keep the community at peace with little crimes like vandalism (graffiti) and not trying to upset the community by locking up a group of juveniles.
Legalistic Style of Policing A local police officer sits right outside of a school zone every morning while the school zone light is blinking. He is sitting with his radar on checking every vehicle's speed. Any vehicle going over the posted school zone speed is writing that driver a ticket. This police officer does not care about your race, sex, or culture whether you get a ticket. Because this officer cares for the city and the kids that attend this school, anybody he pulls over will receive a ticket for speeding in a school zone. This style of policing is mainly a by-the-book style of officer. This style of policing is "law strictly law by issuing many citations and making many misdemeanor arrests." (Dempsey, 2018). Also, the legalistic style of policing " often occurs in the aftermath of a scandal in a watchman-type department that results in the hiring of a "reform" police chief." (Dempsey, 2018) In the situation I talk about, the local police officer ensures every citizen in his community obeys the school zone traffic laws.

Service of Policing The service style of policing is the style that most suburban areas of a community use since their area is larger than the police department. An example of this style would be a drug dealer in an area of a community selling drugs around kids playing. The community members see this happening and do not want this style of crime to happen in the streets next to their houses and schools. So, the community members get together and go to the police department to see how they can get this unwanted crime out of their community. They both have to help with this because the local department wants to help service the community's needs. So they will all devise a plan to move the drug dealers out of the town by showing more of a present, arresting anybody they see buying or selling drugs, and prosecuting them in a court of law. This style of policing is the police department listening to the wants and needs of their community members. Service style "emphasizes serving the needs of the community." (Dempsey,2018). Also, the officers think of themselves more as helpers of the community than as soldiers in a war against crime. (Dempsey,2018). In the service style type of policing, police department see their officers as support service members. Furthermore, as support service members, the officers want to help more with what the community wants to be done with their communities.

Theory Of Policing Evidence-based policing (EBP) Is an approach to policy-making and tactical decision-making for police departments. It has its roots in the larger movement towards evidence-based practices. Preventative policing Is that aspect of law enforcement intended to act as a deterrent to the commission of crime. Problem Solving policing Approach is different from traditional policing methods that focus on responding to crime after it occurs. Instead, it encourages agencies to think innovatively about their responses and view making arrests as only one of a wide array of potential responses. Reactive policing Can be defined as the police responding to specific requests from individuals or groups in the community which encompasses "immediate response to calls" and "follow-up investigations".
