Donnie McClurkin overcame being molested twice, by male
members of his family at the age of 8 and 13. Then at age 31
he was diagnosed with leukemia and overcame it by believing
that God is a healer and by praying for his healing.
Donnie’s life was one bad experience after another and
through gospel music is where he found his voice through
music. This man of faith became a minister and a platiumn
selling gospel artist. Gospel music was a way to connect to
a higher power and escape his pain without speaking about
the horrible things that happened to him. Since then he has
ministered to millions through sermons at his church,
through his music, and the book he wrote about his life and
what happened to him as a child. Through his testimony

2007). Daily Variety, Vol. 295 Issue 3, pA2-A2, 1p, 2c.
Retrieved May, 7, 2007, from MasterFILE Premier database. This article shows the challenge that Christian artist face
from trying to cross over from faith-based music to the
mainstream music industry. According to a Christian music
guru, most Christian artists wants to have the same platform
as rock stars to help make the world a better place to live
through their music. The only problem that arises is from
the religious community, which expects perfection from the
Christian artist. The religious community puts them on a
pedestal and under a microscope from their personal and
professional life as a representation of Christian life to
the world. Christian artist limit their financial success
when they choose to stay on the faith-based track compared
to singing open ended songs that the listener can interpret
in many ways. There are many songs written to express the
love of Christ, but listener will interpret that love to a
man or a woman. A Christian music director stated, first
they look for the message and second it has to be good
quality and third, does the artist live up to the Christian
belief. Christian artist Amy Grant received backlash from
the religious community and public when she went through her
divorce. "Praise the lord: a spirited celebration. (Feb 2006).

Early gospel songs were composed and sung by Africans sold
into slavery as they worked on the plantations of their
masters. They sung and expressed their faith and hoped for a
better life to come. John Newton, a former slave ship
captain converted, repented, and became a minister that
wrote many hymns including “Amazing Grace”. Gospel music has
changed the face of music from the artists that begin
singing in the church as children and take the message and
soul of the music to different genres like rock and roll,
soul, and jazz around the world.

This article discusses behind- the-scenes at the Stellar
awards that honor the music of the gospel community. Gospel
music is big business and major record label contracts like

small venues in the past at local churches and the records
were sold either at the churches are the local mom-and-pop
record stores. Gospel artist were given small offerings from
the churches they performed in. The gospel artists of today
are selling out football stadiums and are selling platinum
records (having sold over a million units). Today’s gospel
artists are business people as well and have ownership of
record labels. Some of the best music producers are from the
faith-based industry with the ministry in music. This is an
industry within an industry. History was made with the
launch of the first 24 hour gospel music channel. The

music and the effect it has on the listener. Gospel music

Andre Crouch and Shirley Caesar to the new school up tempo
sounds of Kirk Franklin, but the message in the music has
and will remain the same because God has not and will never
change. Gospel music touches the broken hearted the lost,
the rich, and the poor. Gospel music is “good news” music
