I.
The area of Christology
that I will be addressing is:
The Death, Burial, and Resurrection of Jesus
II.
How is this aspect of Christology
described in Scripture? (400 word minimum)
Many people know the story of Jesus’ death on the cross, and His resurrection from
the tomb. However, many have tried to disprove it with varying theories; only the Bible contains all the answers to this matter. Even Jesus Himself prophesied His own death and
resurrection in John 2:13-22 where he turned the tables in the temple while speaking with
the Jews and Pharisees. “In other words, the death of Jesus has to be understood in accordance with what Scripture teaches about it--who this Jesus was who died, why his death was so important, what kind of death it was, and what it accomplished (Ross).” Jesus was the Son of God, part of the Divine Trinity along with the Father and Holy Spirit. He was born a man via virgin birth; He could not have been born of man. While speaking of His resurrection in 1 Corinthians, verse 15:22 reaffirms this by saying that only Christ can renew one’s soul as sin has been passed on through man by Adam. Jesus was holy and perfect throughout His entire life on this earth. Only a perfect sacrifice could atone the insurmountable debt of our sin. John 19:16-18 describes his death by crucifixion on a cross, the worst death punishment to receive from the Roman Empire at the time. “The ancient writer Cicero called death by crucifixion, ‘the most cruel and
hideous of tortures,’ and the historian Will Durant said that ‘even the Romans … pitied the victims.’ Crucifixion was so awful that the Romans usually exempted Roman citizens and reserved it for slaves or rebels to discourage uprisings (Harrington).” Not only did Jesus suffer such a cruel death, but He was also flogged and ridiculed on His way to death. He went through immense torment to carry our sin to the cross. No other event could have such an extraordinary impact on the world. The Bible describes the earthly experience in the book of Matthew; the earth shook tremendously splitting rocks and opening tombs, releasing the many believers before them while the veil within the temple
tore from top to bottom (Matthew 27:50-54). Without Christ, we are nothing. We were doomed to die in a devil’s hell, a place never meant for us. Yet, God loved us so much, He gave us mercy through His Son. Jesus came down to earth to be an example for all future Christians, so that we may know
how to live a holy life glorifying Him through all things. When it was time, Jesus was convicted for a crime He could never commit, and sentenced to die. Three days later, He would arise from the grave, conquering death and giving all who would believe new life in Him. The death and resurrection of Christ allows us to repent of our sins and turn to pursue Him. Through Him, and Him alone, are we saved!

III.
Why is this aspect of theology important and relevant to people today? How can it be applied in today’s world? (400 word minimum)
Throughout time, the world has slowly delved deeper and deeper into corruption.
In today’s generation, this process is rapidly advancing as it seems no hope is in sight, however, the Word of God brings light to such a dark, desolate world. Jesus Christ’s life, death, and resurrection brings new life to a dying world, for only by Him are we reborn into a new creation. If we did not have the resurrection, then we would still be doomed to death with our sins (1 Corinthians 15:17). Our entire belief system is based on the death and resurrection just as much. His death on the cross took the weight of our sins off of us,
while also putting it to rest. Jesus death removed the sin from our lives and put it to death for all eternity until the end of time. His resurrection from the grave initiated our new lives in Christ. This was the only way that the penalty of our sin be removed, allowing us to enter into heaven. For anyone who prays and asks for forgiveness from their sins, they will receive salvation and be allowed to enter into His Kingdom. We are also called to reach out to everyone willing to hear the gospel message so that they may also receive the
gift of life (Mark 16:15). Without the perfect sacrifice of Jesus, we would still be abiding by the covenant within the Old Testament. Christ laid down His life for us, establishing a new covenant between us and Him that will last until He calls us home. This covenant allows for a simple prayer and repentance to receive salvation from God. Through this new covenant, we are justified through our faith in Him. “Our justification flows from our union with him, by Spirit-worked faith, along with the other benefits of salvation manifested by that union (Westminster Larger Catechism, 69) (Gaffin Jr.).” God gave us righteousness through our salvation, and because of that, we are now justified through his death and resurrection (Romans 4:23-25). Our new faith must be revealed through us, for faith

without works is nothing (James 2:26). We must allow the light of Christ to be reflected throughout our lives. By sharing what He has done for our lives, we can be sure that we influence others and plant a gospel seed. Just by showing God’s love, we can make an impact on the community around us.
