Chapter 2 – Overcoming Obstacles
Ever since sin entered the world, we deal with several obstacles since our births. Sometimes, we feel hopeless because of a lie saying God does not care about us, but bad things do not come from Him; He allows them to teach lessons. The textbook explains Jacob’s story and how his issues brought him to God, “Jacob spent years running for his life, instead of trusting God’s promises. But God graciously pursued him until He brought him home. And that same God will pursue you until you surrender to His will and His plan for your life.” This quote tells us that the Lord will never give up on us since He hopes we will seek Him more than anyone (Cartwright & Hulshof, 2016, p. 47).
Chapter 6 – No More Excuses
All of us have made excuses at least two thousand times in our lives whenever we feel angry, scared, or confused; but we do it to avoid our issues. However, God does not take no for an answer because He intends to use our special talents for the common good and face our innermost fears. The textbook says “The time for Gideon’s excuses had come to an end. It was time for action! The angel commanded Gideon to tear down his father’s altar of Baal – a Canaanite storm god” (Cartwright & Hulshof, 2016, p. 95). The quote was an example of God using a coward to do His works because He knew Gideon could do anything with His help, even though everyone called Gideon a coward. Chapter 9 – Reaching Out to Others It can be tough reaching out to your peers, especially when you have a close relationship with someone specific. For example, the book says, “Unexpressed love is often interpreted as no love at all. In some cases, it may even be perceived as resentment or rejection” (Cartwright & Hulshof, 2016, p. 137). The quote tells that us if we do not express love to anyone, it will make our family, friends, and romantic partners believe there is no love between us. It is not enough to say you love someone; you must display your affection. Sometimes, God nudges us to talk to an acquaintance since He called us to show love to others, which is good since it will let them know
people care for them. Chapter 10 – Realizing Your Goals
Everyone has goals they want to accomplish such as going to college or finishing a career
to satisfy the desire for doing what they love. Even so, people will not always support your goals because they may think you are too small or do not have what it takes. For example, David wished to kill Goliath to win the battle for his side, but no one had faith in him. “David recognized that the cause and purpose of God were at stake. That’s why he volunteered to fight Goliath” (Cartwright & Hulshof, 2016, p. 155). This portion shows us that we should never run
away from conflict just because others are telling us to do so since God is here to protect us from
any harm.

Good evening, Adam,
I enjoyed reading your post for this week; it was interesting to read. First, I completely agree with how you said everyone is prone to fail sooner or later because making mistakes is inevitable. However, I never thought leaders have difficulty dealing with failure because they have seen it happen to other leaders, rather not wanting to damage their egos and reputation. While it may not feel this way now, there is a silver lining to failure since we get to learn from our mistakes. For example, Moses came from a Hebrew background and did not believe He could lead the Israelites out of slavery; but in the end, Moses chose to rise above his past and look toward the future (Cartwright & Hulshof, 2016, p. 64). As for myself, I always believed no one ever truly loved me since every boy that had feelings for me ended up hurting me. Yet, my family and one best friend still loved me, regardless of how many times I messed up. Most importantly, God reminded me that He is the One who has not changed His opinion and told me that someday I will be everything to a man who only has eyes for me. Later, I decided to move forward with my life by focusing on school to become an accountant but to also be a good friend,
daughter, sister, and aunt to those around me. Nevertheless, my failures taught me to become the best leader I can be for God when I listen to his commandments.

Good evening, Drake,
I enjoyed reading your thoughts on some of the chapters we have read in class; you did a good job writing them out. First, I agree with how you said self-analysis is hard for everyone since we do not like to admit when we are in the wrong. Another problem we deal with every day is temptations from Satan because the book says, “The battle with temptation is not unique to you. It is a universal problem. Everyone faces temptation in one form or another. For some, the struggle is internal: guilt, fear, worry, or depression. For others, the struggle is external:
sex, money, fame, and fortune” (Cartwright & Hulshof, 2016, p. 122). There were times when I felt trapped in my selfish desire for doing the wrong thing because I was so desperate to gain approval from people who disappointed me or did not care about me. However, when I was sixteen, my mental health changed from a happy mood to a depressive state after enduring so many difficulties. Thankfully, the Lord freed me from depression after choosing to forgive myself for things that I did not have guidance on and others for hurting me. All of us have ugly sides to our personalities, but we should not just push all the bad stuff away, we must ask God to help us overcome those weaknesses to help us live better lives. There is no such thing as a perfect Christian because the only perfect person is Jesus, which is why we must look to Him every time.
