1 EM200 The Church’s Ministry 9 December 2012 What is a Healthy Church Member? I would rate my ability to listen for the meaning of Scripture as 8 out of 10. When I am doing personal devotions I tend to try to figure out what God is saying more often than I do when listening to a sermon. I have always been taught to believe that it was important to listen for the meaning of Scriptures because the Bible is the guidebook for life and it is God’s Word. I am very familiar with biblical theology. I grew up in a home that believed in God. Also, I went to a bible institute to learn all about theology and who God is. I believe I have a grasp of the major themes and developments of the Bible and I would be able to, and have, explained to new Christians and non-Christians how the Bible fits together as one book. In order for me to keep myself thinking about, applying, and sharing the gospel, I will need to continue doing what I am doing now. Reading the Bible for myself, praying for opportunities at work to speak to others about Christ, and actually share what I believe with the unsaved. I have had this opportunity just a few weeks ago to share the gospel with a coworker. It had reinforced the importance of understanding how to express what I have experienced into words. Do we love other Christians? This is a tough question to ask because Christians are supposed to be the people who are the most loving. The problem is that Christians think that other believers do not need to be treated as nicely as unsaved because they already have the knowledge of saving hope. Other believers need to be treated equally and not favored either. A church with members who are committed to each other would possibly make the community believe that the members of the church only care about each other, or the community
2 might realize that the true love that comes only from knowing Christ is being shown in action. This would cause the community to ask questions and have a desire to also be a part of this unity. Commitment is something that can only fully be obtained by understanding the ultimate example of faithfulness. On a scale from 1 to 10 I would have to say that I am committed to the membership of my church at a level 6.5. The reason I rate myself at this number is because I go every Sunday and tithe, but I am not as involved in church as I should be. It is hard to get involved when I will be leaving next year. I sometimes try to find excuses, but I know it will be easier to be more involved in church once I am set in a place and have the opportunity to live in that one area for an extended period of time. I tend to judge other philosophies and viewpoints by the Scripture rather than reconciling or judging Scripture by other philosophies and views. The reason being, that I have been learning a lot about the importance of Scripture in school all of my life. Being almost brainwashed into the Biblical mindset is a great advantage to have when trying to defend my faith. One strategy for spiritual growth that I need the most in my life right now is abiding in Christ. I have been learning through the past three years that it is important to do right only because of a desire to do right. If I am doing righteous acts because I think it makes me a better person then I am doing it for the wrong reasons. A desire to be righteous because of God’s grace in my life should be my main motivation for doing right. There are many ways I can pray for my leaders. One way that I need to pray for my leaders is in the area of decision making. I can pray that they make the wise choices that God has intended for them to do in order to fulfill His purposes on the earth. I can also pray that my leaders will become saved. I know that praying for them to be saved will not make them saved,
3 but my prayers may motivate someone who is able to have this opportunity to witness to leaders in this country. In my prayer life, I have been encouraged by being able to pray with my roommate at night on occasion. We pray for each other instead of for ourselves. The body of Christ is there to be able to intercede for each other in prayer. I have also been concerned about the lost more now than usual. This is something that I have to continue praying about and making sure I do not miss opportunities to speak to the lost.
