Microculture
1. -Word of Wisdom
-Patriarchal blessing
-Family Home Evening / FHE
-Honor Code / Ecclesiastical Endorsement
-Saving ordinances
-Garments
-general conference
2. In the LDS microculture, the use of language is not just limited to communication (Hasty, 6.1, A Waggle is Not a Word, para 2), but it also involves performativity (Hasty, 6.4, The Performativity of Language, para 3). The vocabulary we use is not just a tool for conveying meaning, but it is also a way of performing our beliefs and values. Our words reflect the core values and beliefs that hold utmost importance for our community, such as the significance of family, the role of priesthood, and the importance of ordinances. These concepts are integral to the LDS faith and are thus not only reflected but also performed in the communication used within the community.
3. For those who are not a part of the LDS community, comprehending the subtle differences in meaning between the various words and symbols used within this culture can be particularly challenging. This is because they lack exposure to the same cultural context. To overcome this obstacle, people can interact, learn, and experience the LDS community's concepts through. This can be achieved by engaging with its members, educating oneself on its practices, and immersing
oneself in its culture. These efforts go beyond
language acquisition (Hasty, 6.3, Language Acquisition…, para 2) and provide an opportunity to deepen appreciation of the values and beliefs underpinning the LDS vocabulary.
4. My understanding of the
vernacular
(Hasty, 6.3, Speech Communities…, para 4) of the LDS microculture has grown through various means. These include my participation in the LDS Church, attending church meetings, engaging in various activities, receiving guidance from parents, leaders, and teachers, and reading materials such as scriptures, conference talks, and other church publications.
