REL 275C: The Teachings and Doctrine of the Book of Mormon Name: 1. Read 1 Nephi 17 and answer the following questions: a. This chapter represents a pivotal point where God moves forward with His promise to deliver Lehi and his family to the Promised Land. What do verses 2-3 teach about the idea that while God is working to give us specific blessings, he is also helping us become more like Him? He allows us to show our strength in the challenges that he gives us and they are designed to make us become more like Jesus. Our life isn’t easier necessarily because we have the gospel, but we are given directions with how to do with it. b. As you read verses 4-6, consider the difference between waiting for the day promises will be fulfilled and arriving at the moment when they begin to be fulfilled. How is our faith tested in both experiences? We are tested during both of these to endure until we are given a rest periods. The Lord will bless us if we are patient and do as he asks of us. c. Verses 7-11 illustrate how God makes us partners in obtaining our gifts from Him. How have you seen Him call you to a mountain, instruct you in doing something you must do, and then being left to follow through on His new and difficult guidance? Why are you grateful that he stretches and involves you in giving you His gifts? I once was prompted to invite my friend to a church activity and I did and he had a lot of fun going with me. Now it’s not like he converted or anything, but I think that if we can use the Gospel to positively influence otherse, than we are given the gift of blessing others. d. Verses 13-14 teach two important outcomes that will be ours when God delivers on His promises to us? What are the outcomes?  If they are obedient to God then he promises them two things. He promises to be there light through the wilderness and will keep them safe, and that he will lead them towards the promised land. e. Verses 17-20 show us we do not only need to believe in God's ability to deliver on His promises, but that we will also be tested as to whether we can exercise faith in His servants as they play their role in helping us obtain God's gifts. How can you prepare yourself to follow the prophet or another leader when they follow God's guidance? It’s important to try to keep the Holy Ghost with you too help you really understand and listen. It is important to have a reverent and open minded mindset. f. As you read verses 21-32 consider how challenging it is to keep our eyes on the eternal prize rather than settling for temporary distractions. How do you remember your opportunities so you can maintain the faith needed to remain faithful and not murmur? It is important to remember the blessings that the Lord has given us already and how he has answered is and has lead us to the promised land. g. What do verses 33-47 teach is the essential thing we must do if we are to receive God's choice blessings in our lives? If we harden our hearts than we will not be able to receive the blessings of the Lord.
h. Verses 48-55 illustrate the choice we have to murmur and doubt or believe and support. How do you refuse to murmur and choose to believe? They left to go to the promised land like the Lord said, but he also teaches us that we must be loyal servants to our Heavenly Father. They learned through Nephi that the Lord is all powerful and had faith once again. 2. Read 1 Nephi 20:1-7 and answer the following questions: a. What has God done in your life that caused you to know of His existence and power? I felt a powerful sense of peace and I could fel the spirit so strongly on the day of my Baptism. I feel blessed to be able to have that power with me at all times. b. According to these verses, why does God tell us things He will do long before He does them? God makes many promises and they are always fulfilled. He told them things that would happen to prove that God is all powerful and that he is who we should be listening to, not denying. 3. Read 1 Nephi 21:13-16 and answer the following questions: a. How do you suppose God feels if we feel neglected or forgotten? He is our original Father and he feels that you have forgotten him because he is always with you. b. Restate verse 15 in your own powerful words. How could your own mother forget about he own son that she raised and cared for. c. How does it make you feel to know the Savior has retained the marks of His crucifixion as a reminder of His promises to you? It comforts me because it is juist another way to show that The Lord will never forget about us and the sacrifices that he made for us to be on Earth. d.
