W08 Gospel Research and Insight Name: Daniel Allred Instructions Follow the steps below to complete this activity. Save this document with your name in the file name. When you have completed this activity and answered all the questions, follow the instructions in your course to submit the document for grading and feedback. Step 01 Carefully read and review Section 43-45 of Doctrine and Covenants. Step 02 Select three gospel principles from these revelations that God desires disciples to live by during turbulent Second Coming times and find three teachings/quotes from modern prophets and apostles that discuss the principles you chose to highlight. Provide the reference where you found them, then explain the connection and why they are significant. ( 500-600 words ) For each gospel principle found, including the following: State the principle (Give the scripture reference and Second Coming Sign associated with the principle). A teaching or a quote from modern prophets or apostles (Cite the source and the prophetic or apostolic words). Describe the Connection (Provide the connection you have made between the principle you mentioned and the quote you are citing). Note: This week’s reading and Enrichments A&H of the Student Manual, General Conference , and the Scripture Citation Index or the Index beta version will be a great tools to accomplish this. Example from previous student’s work: Principle 1 : Beware of false prophet (Doctrine and Covenants 43:1–7) Teaching 1 : “This ought to be clear enough for us all. If the Lord has a revelation or a commandment to give to His people, it is going to come from the head, and when someone else comes among the people professing to have revelations and to give commandments we can test that matter very readily. We do not have to go into any details or make an extended examination of the claims, there is no need of any investigation whatever, because the Lord has given us the key as a law to the Church by which we are to be governed.” (Joseph Fielding Smith, Conference Report, October 1943, pp. 96–98)
Connection 1 : The only one who can and will receive revelations and commandments from the Lord [for His Church], will be the one who is appointed to be His mouthpiece on the earth. No other individual will have the authority to speak for Him. If that individual strays from his position, the Lord will not allow the individual to lead the rest of His children astray. Principle 1: (D & C 43:2-3) Only the living prophet has the right to revelation for the Church Teaching 1: “I remember years ago when I was a bishop I had President [Heber J.] Grant talk to our ward. After the meeting, I drove him home. At that time there was a great deal of criticism against the President of the Church because of a front-page editorial some of you may remember. We talked about it. When we got to his home I got out of the car and went up on the porch with him. Standing by me, he put his arm over my shoulder and said: "My boy, you always keep your eye on the President of the Church, and if he ever tells you to do anything, and it is wrong, and you do it, the Lord will bless you for it." Then with a twinkle in his eye, he said, "But you don't need to worry. The Lord will never let his mouthpiece lead the people astray." (Marion G Romney Conference Report, October 1960 , General Priesthood Meeting 78.) Connection 1: Direct revelation from God is exclusively granted to our Prophet, President Russell M. Nelson. This fundamental principle equips us to differentiate between genuine prophets and impostors. Following the guidance of the Holy Spirit and adhering to the teachings of the Lord's written word ensure our journey along the path of safety. Principle 2: (D&C 44:1-2) “I will pour out my Spirit upon them in the day that they assemble themselves together.” Teaching 2: "We attend sacrament meetings to worship the Lord. If the meeting is conducted or if we attend with any other thought, we have missed the spirit of the occasion. Those who attend meeting only when the speaker is eloquent, the lecturer is noted, or the music is excellent, are far afield of the high purpose and loftiness of this meeting in the house of prayer... Worship is an individual matter. The best choir, the best speaker, the most noted lecturer, cannot bring true worship into your soul. It must proceed from within, out of a deep sense of love and devotion and dependence and humility” ( The Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, edited by Edward L. Kimball [Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1982], 514-515.) Connection 2: The Lord assures us that by gathering together and demonstrating faith in Him, He will bestow His Spirit upon them. By faithfully fulfilling the Lord's directives, we secure eternal blessings, including the constant companionship of His Spirit and a multitude of other divine favors.
Principle 3: (D&C 45:64-75) Zion: a place of defense and refuge Teaching 3: “ There is one aspect of [Zion] that only the Latter-day Saints have taken to heart... it is that doctrine that sets them off most sharply from all of the other religions, namely, the belief that Zion is possible on the earth, that men possess the capacity to receive it right here and are therefore under obligation to waste no time moving in the direction of Zion. The instant one realizes that Zion is a possibility, one has no choice but to identify himself with the program that will bring about the quickest possible realization of its perfection.” ( Approaching Zion, edited by Don E. Norton [Salt Lake City and Provo: Deseret Book Co., Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies, 1989], 28 - 29.) Connection 3: Within the scriptures, several terms closely align with the concept of Zion, including gathering, preparation, defense, and refuge. Zion represents a sanctuary where God's people can seek refuge from the tumultuous events surrounding the Second Coming. The saints are instructed to gather in Zion, where they will find safety and deliverance from the widespread tribulations and judgments preceding the Second Coming. Step 03 Reflect on the insights you gained this week. Write a 150-250 word paragraph ; describe what the single most powerful insight was that came to you as you studies this week’s revelations and what you hope to do with it. Your paragraph should contain: o A description of what stood out to you. o What you hope to do better as a result of this new or deeper understanding you have been given. Here are some questions to consider in writing this paragraph: o Was there a particular “one=liner” in these revelations that captures your greatest insight? o What was your biggest “aha” moment in studying these revelations? o What do you hope to do better as a result of what you have studied? The statement, "The Lord will never let his mouthpiece lead the people astray," impressed upon me the reliability of divine guidance through our modern prophets. Additionally, the concept of Zion as a place of defense and refuge has emphasized the urgency of actively participating in building a community grounded in righteousness. My greatest insight lies in the realization that true worship and spiritual growth stem from within, irrespective of external circumstances. Moving forward, I am committed to being better at reading and studying conference talks, striving to align my actions with divine counsel. This means prioritizing

personal revelation and actively contributing to the establishment of Zion. Through these efforts, I aim to draw closer to our heavenly father and to ensuring I am on solid footing.
