Dr. Keller writes about the importance of work and how it correlates in multiple biblical passages. We as humans are designed to work as it gives us a sense of fulfilment, even God worked six days and rested on the seventh. The fulfilment of working is to benefit humanity so that we can all work together for the greater good of society. Work is our design and our dignity; it is also a way to serve god through creativity, particularly in the creation of culture. (Keller, T., & Alsdorf, K. L. 2016). Working longer than normal hours can have negative affect and results in prioritizing work over god which is mentioned in Dr. Keller's book in reference to passages of the bible about this. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. (Colossians 3:23-23). This passage form Colossians means that were supposed to work hard and with a gracious heart but can't prioritize worldly possessions over our lord and savior. When further elaborating on receiving an inheritance as your reward Paul (The writer of Colossians) isn’t speaking about worldly possessions that have a monetary value but is referring to everlasting life in the kingdom of heaven. Giving can come in forms outside of physical assets. This Is further supported in the book of Luke when referring to the woman that washed the feet of Jesus. Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.” (Luke 7:44-47). This woman made a great sacrifice and received everlasting life in the kingdom of god because of her generosity to the king and savior. Essentially she was just doing what she felt was her “job” in
the presence of Jesus but was rewarded with an inheritance that has no monetary value but was bought with the blood of Jesus Christ when he died on the cross for our sins.
