Biblical Family Foundations paper #1 Ethan Leonard (03/07/24) Every problem in our day-to-day lives has a solution and marriage is no different. In the same way a pirate cannot find the treasure without an accurate treasure map, we cannot begin to find the resolutions to our problems without first knowing where to find objective answers concerning our problems. This is where the doctrine of Scripture’s sufficiency comes into play. The doctrine of the sufficiency of Scripture states that God’s Word is fully sufficient to provide complete and relevant answers to any counseling situation (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Scripture is that accurate map that leads us straight to the treasure, which is the answer to our conflicts. Knowing that we, as fallen humans, have a plan that is already laid out for us in God’s Word makes combatting our trials feel so much more realistic. We do not have to enter our hardships blindly, but we can rest fully in God’s sufficient leading, through Scripture, that will bring us to our conflict’s resolution. This sufficiency is just as much authoritative as it is able. John 17:17 clearly tells us that God’s Word is truth! It is not a truth or some truth, but it literally equals the truth. God is our commander and has given us an authoritative plan of attack in His Word, but it is up to us to follow through with that plan. We can stubbornly choose to reject the Truth and be led by some incomplete guide that is tainted by sin, or we can follow the completely pure and sufficient Word of God. The only way to find true piece in the darkness of our troubles is to actively choose the only true light, Scripture! This is not something that will happen automatically though. It will require time and purposeful action on what God’s Word commands, but this plan provides full hope beyond anything that the world can offer (Jeremiah 29:11).
Biblical Family Foundations paper #1 Now that we have covered where to find our answers to growth, we can look at what it means to apply this knowledge. We call this application progressive sanctification. But we can go even further than this when defining what progressive sanctification really is. Progressive sanctification is “ the continuing work of God in the life of the believer, making him or her actually holy (Tautges).” This is our second point of hope! We do not need to be perfectly holy to make decisions in our lives as believers. God does not want us, however, to just be complacent and live a mundane, growthless Christian life. Just like the sufficiency of Scripture would tell us, the Word of God is our map of how to grow in holiness. Matthew 4:4 emphasizes the truth that the Word of God is a necessity for life! Choosing to follow Scripture’s “workout plan” brings a God-given hope along with it, the hope of becoming something more (2 Corinthians 3:18)! Hebrews 11:6 tells us that we cannot please God without faith, and the apostle Paul tells us in Romans 10:17 that faith comes from the Word of God. There is no way that a Christian can make decisions that please God while ignoring what God has told us in Scripture. The promise of God doing a work in and through our difficulties is so powerful. This is because the only true change is heart change, and heart change can only come from God. The psalmist, David, presents the power of Scripture in Psalm 19:7-9. Scriptural hope can be found in any counseling situation, whether that be depression, lust, or a host of other struggles. One of these struggles is marriage. Whether it’s the desire to leave your spouse or the battle of taking up the God-given roles within marriage, the Word of God is completely sufficient to provide the answers to how we should handle our troubles. By looking to this
Biblical Family Foundations paper #1 sufficiency, we can have the wonderful hope of God that we will be progressively sanctified and become more holy in our trials.
