Eternal Family REL 200C Unit 5: Video Deep Dive Before Watching the Videos Step 1: Read the following paragraph from The Family Proclamation, and provide the information requested. “Husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. "Children are an heritage of the Lord" (Psalms 127:3). Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, to teach them to love and serve one another, to observe the commandments of God and to be law-abiding citizens wherever they live. Husbands and wives—mothers and fathers—will be held accountable before God for the discharge of these obligations. “The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities. By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners. Disability, death, or other circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation. Extended families should lend support when needed.” If these two paragraphs are “the answers,” what are “the questions” the Lord’s apostles are answering? (Provide at least 3-4) 1. What is the purpose and significance of marriage in the eyes God? 2. What responsibilities do husbands and wives have towards each other and their children? 3. How should we raise children in accordance to God’s teachings? 4. What principles should guide successful marriages and families? Step 2: Answer the following questions. 1. Considering that “ children are an heritage to the Lord ” (Psalms 127:3), identify at least two teachings in these paragraphs that might encourage married couples to have children?
Eternal Family REL 200C The statement "Children are a heritage of the Lord" (Psalms 127:3) shows the belief that children are a divine gift or blessing to parents by God. This teaching suggests that married couples should view children as a precious heritage from the Lord, encouraging them to embrace parenthood as a responsibility. 2. Entitled ” is not a word commonly used by the Lord’s apostles. What happened in premortal life that could explain why that word/concept is appropriate in the context of children being raised by both their Mom and their Dad? The paragraph emphasizes that "Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan." It shows the importance of marriage and family within God's plan. This suggests that one of the purposes of marriage is to raise children within the bonds of matrimony. Couples who believe in and follow these teachings may feel encouraged to have children as a fundamental aspect of their marital union and spiritual journey. 3. Which of the nine gospel principles in paragraph 7 have you seen personally make a positive difference in your family (or would have made that difference if it had been better applied)? 1. Faith 2. Prayer 3. Repentance 4. Forgiveness 5. Respect 6. Love 7. Compassion 8. Work 9. Family Time While Watching the Videos Step 3: Watch the three video segments linked on Canvas (I-Learn). While watching the videos, provide answers to the following questions. Questions: 1. What specific statement/quote/teaching impressed you the most and why? This could also be a question you are willing to take to the Lord for further insight, comfort, and godly perspective. [1+ paragraph(s), include the exact quote with reference citation; e.g. “Elder Oaks, Gen. Conf. Oct 2013”]
Eternal Family REL 200C One of the quotes I found that was profound was Psalms 127:3 “Children are a heritage of the Lord.” This is simple but gives us the power of parenthood and the trust put on parents. As we all struggle, it is important to remember that God has a plan for not just us but our whole family. His wisdom will guide through the struggles of parenting and stewardship. 2. How will you implement what you have learned from the video deep dive? As I grow as an adult and through time, using the things I have learned, I can hopefully become a good parent. I will be prepared for the struggles of stewardship and the great responsibility that comes with parenting. This reminds me that if I am struggling I can always lean towards God for counsel.
