1 Week 3: Literary Context Analysis Marisa N. Pendery Department of CSDO, Abilene Christian University BIBO 320.W2 – Intro/Biblical Interpretation Professor Brandon Pierce March 24, 2024
2 Literary Context Analysis For the coursework this semester, the passage that I chose to analyze was Luke 5:17-26 “The Son of Man Forgives and Heals,” found in the Christian Standard Bible translation. This specific passage appears in chapter five, in the book of Luke; chapter five also includes: “The First Disciples,” “A Man Cleansed,” “The Call of Levi,” and “A Question about Fasting.” The chapter begins with Jesus choosing the first few of his disciples, Andrew and Peter, the fisherman. The catch of fish by Jesus was a big enough miracle for them to drop everything and follow Jesus on his journey, which the brothers, James, and John, soon followed in line. Jesus then completes another miracle, as he heals a man with leprosy, allowing the man to travel back to Jerusalem and no longer be in hiding. In the section I chose, Jesus healed a paralyzed man, and he was able to walk once again. In the next section, Jesus did not physically heal anyone, but worked to create unity between his people by eating and celebrating with tax collectors. To complete the chapter, Luke compares Jesus eating with the tax collectors (sinners) to how it would be more sinful to fast in the presence of the Lord. A major theme in this chapter is faith and repentance, and Luke 5:17-26 contributes to those themes. They contribute because Jesus first healed the paralyzed man’s soul, but also healed him physically when he saw the faith of the paralyzed man and the four men that carried him. Episode 1: Luke 5:12-16 Episode 2: Luke 5:17-26 Episode 3: Luke 5:27-32 What is this episode telling us about Jesus? -When we are sick and have sinned, if we What is this episode telling us about Jesus? – That having faith in him and believing in What is this episode telling us about Jesus? -In this section, it shows us that he cares

Episodes 1, 2, and 3: Luke 5:12-16; 5:17-26; 5:27-32 What is the gospel writer trying to communicate to his readers by the way he connects these stories? – The Gospel writer is trying to emphasize that through faith in Jesus, miracles will happen by his grace. Through these three sections, we see the miracles of two men being healed of physical disabilities because of their faith; then in section three, we see sinners being accepted because of their willingness to repent and follow Jesus. When studying Luke 5:12-16, it helped me to be able to better understand the original chapter that I chose, Luke 5:17-26. The two stories can relate to each other in a major theme of being healed from a physical disability, but they were also healed from any past sins committed. The man with leprosy was outcasted from the city because of the way that he looked, but when Jesus healed him, he was then allowed to go back into the city to spread the news about his healing. Then we see the paralyzed man that showed faith, but more importantly the men that carried him also had faith. This section was one of the longer passages in the chapter, but it helps to relate that it is necessary to surround yourself with those that are also strong in their faith and will be able to carry you to Jesus. Therefore, Luke 5:12-16 helps to better influence my understanding of Luke 5:17-26, because it emphasizes that faith is more powerful than we think, and it is needed to follow Jesus and truly trust him and the miracles he can perform.
