Journal Submission (Week 2) – Reagan Schwarz Webinar, Prompt #1: What methods of teaching in the New Testament do you like the most and why? I have always enjoyed the parables found in the New Testament as a type of teaching. I can appreciate the symbolism, especially as I learn more about the cultural contexts that shed more light on the deeper meaning being conveyed. I like it because it takes these narratives, and you learn the moral of the story that can be extended out into our own lives in modern times. As a kid, the story itself is what would draw me in, so I have lots of good memories of them as well. It is wonderful to see how my understanding and love for the parables I learned about as a child have only expanded with my testimony and experience. Jesus in Historical Context I, Prompt #1: How has knowing the historical context of a specific scripture passage, one of the texts Dr. Grey discussed, or another text of your choice, aided you in understanding the text. (2–4 sentences) Dr. Grey talks about how certain texts are powerful on their own but enhanced when contextualized. This concept has certainly been true for pieces of literature I’ve consumed over the course of my life. I find this especially true in poetry. This art form is one that is not always explicit, and the context gives the appropriate perspective to interpret the prose. For example, O Captain! My Captain! is about the death of Abraham Lincoln, which colors the text and gives a new feeling to the reader, knowing who he was and all he meant to our country. Jesus in Historical Context I, Prompt #2: Now that you have learned about the historical, political, and cultural landscape of first-century Palestine (as it developed from the Persian through Roman periods), in your course journal, briefly write some personal reflections on how this information clarifies aspects of Jesus's life, teachings, or ministry that inspire you and how, generally, you think that understanding historical context could help you find more meaningful personal application in your scripture study. (1–2 paragraphs) Understanding the historical, political, and cultural landscape in first century Palestine has contextualized various aspects of Jesus’ mortal
ministry. Cultural shifts under Roman rule with Herod and Pilate shape Jesus’ immediate setting, leading to societal fracturing between the Jews in the rich, Hellenized cities and the poor, traditional villages. Jesus’ ability to empathize with the poor is informed by his own humble upbringing. Jesus’ alignment with the outcast and marginalized is an act that goes again the cultural and political status quo that is informed by decades of historical context. It inspires me to continue to follow God even in the midst of social complexities.
