BIBL 104 Name: B IBLE S TUDY P ROJECT : I NTERPRETATION Passage: Acts 19:11-22 School of Behavioral Sciences, Liberty University BIBL 104: Survey of Old and New Testament Prof. Timothy Moroz November 20th, 2023 Page 1 of 5
BIBL 104 A. Summarize: Determine the author’s main point. In 1-2 paragraphs (200-400 words) explain what you think the author is trying to communicate in this passage. Remember two things. First, the focus of this summary is theological and not narrative. In other words, your summary should highlight what this passage communicates about who God is and what God is doing. Second, words like “I,” “We,” “Us,” and “Our” are application words and not interpretation words. Thus, they should not be used in your answer for this question. Interpretation is about “then and there” and not “here and now.” We were not there so the passage is not about us. Our “part” in the passage is the application or how we will respond to God’s Word. The author is trying to communicate the significance in Gods power and how he gave power to Paul to perform miracles. This passage describes how Pual healed people by curing diseases and casting out evil spirits in the name of the Lord. The shows just to what great length Gods power can go. Paul would heal the Ephesians with his handkerchiefs or aprons. However, after this the priests would begin to try to copy him leading to the use of sorcery and magic and wounds of others. This shows that God knows who can be trusted to fulfill his wishes for good and help others. Paul was someone who was worthy to God, and he knew he would use the power he was given for good without taking advantage. This passage also showed that healing was rooted in those who had faith and would be able to receive Gods power. While those who just wanted to abuse his power would suffer the consequences such as the Seven sons of Sceva. Once the seven sons of Sceva tried to perform an exorcism the evil spirt took advantage and wounded them. This caused the Ephesians to fear God which led to them burning their magic books and quitting their practices. This shows how God can insight fear in people when they go against his wishes. God is in favor of those who worship and seek his guidance rather than abusing the gifts he gives. Page 2 of 5
BIBL 104 B. Identify: Based on your answer above, write out one principle from this passage. What is the one thing the whole thing is saying? You should be able to express this principle in 1- 3 sentences. As with the previous answer, this principle should be theological and rooted in who God is and/or what God is doing. Please remember that words like “I,” “We,” “Us,” and “Our” are application words and not interpretation words. One principle from this passage is that the lord’s power is so great that it can be passed through mortal beings such as Paul. With this Gods power should not be taken for granted and Christians should strive to follow God, have faith in him, and respect him. C. Check: Consult at least one scholarly resource to offer support for the theological principle that you believe the passage is teaching. In 1-2 paragraphs (200-400 words), quote, properly cite, and interact with this scholarly resource to demonstrate that it supports your theological and interpretive conclusion. The theological principal of this passage is that God has an almighty power, and his power is only shared to those who he deems worth. However, if one tries to duplicate those powers, they will be shown why you don’t try to replicate Gods power and take him for granted. Throughout acts it showed us how God translated his power through God to heal the people of Ephesus. Once this was down priests attempted to copy Paul and quickly learned how those where wrongful acts. “There were Jewish exorcists that claimed power to cast out demons” (MacArthur, 2005, p. 3333). MacArthur also states that “the seven sons of Sceva committed employed fraud and trickery to execute the phony exorcisms". As they were not called upon God to perform these things, they learned that Gods named should not be sued for their own gain. While the seven sons of Sceva had the wrong motives the demon attacked them as he only knew of Jesus and Paul but not of these men. After the news came back to the Ephesians, they realized they did not Page 3 of 5

BIBL 104 want to follow the seven sons of Sceva they quit their practices and burned their magic books. “Burning them proved their repentance (MacArthur, 2005, p. 3752). This passage showed how powerful God truly is and the importance of going to God for help but not abusing and misusing his name. Page 4 of 5
