Discussion Thread 1 Topic: Gender, Sexuality, and Promiscuity OPTION 1: Based on this module's reading, how does culture impact
our understanding of gender and sexuality? In what ways are the
cultural factors consistent with or inconsistent with a biblical
understanding of sexuality and gender? Based on this module's reading, how does culture impact our
understanding of gender and sexuality?
The gender or sex of an individual is determined based off of the
biological aspect of the male or female. Gender roles and human sexuality
are based on society and cultural factors. In our reading we learned that
males are the aggressive and dominant ones, and the females are known to
be more gentle and more compliant towards things (Blaswick, J. & Blaswick
J., 2019). Sex and genders are often terms that are used interchangeably but
we have to know the difference between them. What many people know
about sexuality has come from what they have learned from their culture.
Every culture has a different sex symbol and also different responses to
things. In some cultures, the sex symbol of a woman may be legs or showing
skin. Sexuality is culturally conditioned and the social aspects of one’s life
are as well (Blaswick, J. & Blaswick J., 2019). All of these aspects are what
shape each individual’s life and outlook on gender and sexuality. In what ways are the cultural factors consistent with or inconsistent
with a biblical understanding of sexuality and gender? The Bible tells and shows us ways of being able to control the sexuality
in a healthy manner. Those two ways are to remain celibate prior to
becoming married and to be with one person while married. God provides us
simple instructions to live a prosperous, healthy life. Cultural factors can tend
to be consistent and inconsistent as well with the laws and rules that God
has placed for us to follow. Religion is a subculture of our cultural system.
Each religion has its own teachings and rules that they ask their followers to
follow. Cultural factors can sometimes be contradicting to what we are to
follow in the Bible. This is when we must have the proper knowledge and will
power to know that we must follow less of the culture and more of God! This
is where we must realize that “For Go so loved the world that he gave his
only begotten Son, that whosever believeth in Him should not perish, but
have everlasting life” (
