Session 1 Old Testament Story Board Part 1: After reading Genesis 1-3, list out the ways these chapters introduce the biblical narrative for the following categories. For each category, the student should include several robust sentences that are focused on the text. One-word or sparse answers will not suffice. What do we learn about:
God
: God is all powerful. God created all things living and non-living by speaking them into existence in just six days' time. We also learn that everything that God created was good in the beginning, before sin entered the world. God is all powerful above and below and in the world (Holy Bible English Standard Version 2001/2016). That is amazing when you think about how he is always around us.
Humans
: As stated by Wright in the book seven sentences,” We were created to exercise the delegated kinship of God within creation.”( Wright 2019 ch1 pg 20) We also see that Humans were created in Gods image, male from the dust of the ground and female from the rib of man, made to come to life by God breathing air into the humans (Holy Bible English Standard
Version 2001/2016). This to me is so fascinating, and awesome, to think not only did he create us in his image, but our very being is from his breath in us.
How humans interact
: Humans' interaction with God and each other was innocent and without shame until they ate the forbidden fruit in the garden of Eden. After that, their interaction
was that of embarrassment and shame at their eyes being open to good and evil (Holy Bible English Standard Version 2001/2016). When I read this I couldn't help and wonder what exactly went through their heads at the moment their eyes were opened, they ran and hid. Yes, because
3
they were naked, but then did that mean that they were filled with lust? Repulse for their bodies? Something I pondered.
The world:
The world was a void until God spoke everything thing into creation from the earth to the skies and all living and non-living things on the earth and in the sky. God did this
in only six days (Holy Bible English Standard Version 2001/2016). It amazes me how, in such a short amount of time, God made such beauty. “The whole universe, including planet earth, is God's property”(Wright 2019 ch1 pg 18) God lets us live here by his love and grace.
The way creation reacts with the Creator
: All creation was made by God. He spoke it all into existence, by saying let there be light, darkness, water creatures above and below, and they came to be. He made male, and females in his image,to walk in the Garden of Eden with him. We see in the beginning they listened to his authority and walked with him without shame, then after they disobeyed him they hid in shame, (Holy Bible English Standard Version 2001/2016). Humans rebelled against God in the garden of Eden and still rebel against God today.
The problem of sin
: The problem of sin is that it separates us from God after Adam and Eve ate of the tree of knowledge from their first reaction was to run and hide from God, the second was to place blame.I also read that along with sin comes pain, heartache and selfishness (Holy Bible English Standard Version 2001/2016). As Wright wrote”When humanity rebels against God,the rest of the created order suffers the effects”.(Wright 2019 Ch1 Pg 26)
The solution for sin
: At the time of Adam and Eve, the immediate solution was to clothe
them and kick them out of the garden, so they would not eat of the tree of life, so that they would
not live in sin forever but instead die in time (Holy Bible English Standard Version 2001/2016).

The solution to sin is not in us or of us but only one God can provide through the death and resurrection of Christ.(Wright 2019 ch1 )
Part 2: After reading Genesis 12:1-3, make note of the three things God promises to Abram: land, offspring (people), and blessing. Why are these three things significant? List the three, and robustly explain why they are important. How are they a part of the solution
for sin in Part 1? Appeal to your Wright textbook for help.
Land
: When God calls Abram to pack up and leave his home, he makes a promise of land that will belong to him and his offspring, and will one day become a great nation. I believe that this is significant, because as we follow the story we will see that Abram never actually possesses the land himself, but keeps the faith, being an example to all that follow him (Wright 2019 ch2 ).
Offspring:
God also promises Abram offspring enough to start a nation. As we read on we will see that God does give Abram offspring. This is significant because Abram is a very old man, yet it shows that God is all powerful and able to do as he promises that we can believe and trust in what he says to us. We see that through Abram and his wife a great nation is born that believes in and worships God, and later we will see that from this nation a savior for the whole world is born (Wright 2019 ch2 ). Blessing:
God tells Abram five different times in two verses that he will be blessed and be a blessing to the whole world. Can you imagine how Abram must have felt? To hear he will be blessed with children at a old age, that will become a whole nation, that will spread over the earth bringing blessings to people everywhere. It all unfolds in the story line of Abram as God promises(Wright 2019 ch2 ).

So, Abram’s people and his nation coming about is very important and part of the solution to sin. One aspect is that they are worshipers of God, and can teach others about God. They also show great trust in God, sacrificing comfort to follow and trust in God. I would say that the biggest part they play toward the solution to sin in part one would be that Christ later was born out of that nation.
Part 3: In the unfolding story of the OT, the three aspects of God’s promise to Abram continue to be fulfilled throughout the OT. Do some research on the OT storyline (think about using your textbooks, the lectures, CCU’s online resources, and good peer-
reviewed content such as https://bibleproject.com/) and cite places where these three aspects of God’s promise to Abram show up later.
Cite at least one example from the Law, one from the Prophets, and one from the Writings. (Refer to the lecture content for specifics on the OT canon).
Law: Here are a couple of examples where the promises to Abraham show back up in the books called laws: Exodus;6:8”I will bring you into the land that I swore to give to Abraham,
to Isaac, and to Jacob. I will give it to you for a possession. I am the Lord”(Holy Bible English Standard Version 2001/2016).
Numbers;32:11 “Surely non of the men who came up out of Egypt from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob, because they have not wholly followed me”(Holy Bible English Standard Version 2001/2016).
Prophets:
Here are a couple examples from the prophets where the promises to Abraham
from God show back up: Isaiah; 51:2 “Look to Abraham your father and to Sarah who bore you; for he was but one when I called him, that I might bless him and multiply him” (Holy Bible English Standard Version 2001/2016).
6
Isaiah; 41:8” But you,Israel,my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, the offspring of Abraham, my friend” (Holy Bible English Standard Version 2001/2016).
Writings:
Here are a couple examples, in the books called writings, where the promises of God to Abraham show back up: 2Chronicles;20:7”Did you not,our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel, and give it forever to the descendants of Abraham your friend(Holy Bible English Standard Version 2001/2016)?
Psalms;105:5-6
5 ”Remeber the wondrous works that he has done,
6 O offspring of Abraham,his servant, children of Jacob, his chosen ones”(Holy Bible English Standard Version 2001/2016);
Part 4: Reflect on the significance of seeing the OT as an unfolding story. Conclude the assignment with an assessment of the importance of recognizing this narrative flow.
We must see that the significance of the OT is that it is the first half of an unfolding story that continues into the NT, the second half of the story where all the promises and salvation are presented to us.
We must recognize that the narrative in the OT is important to follow, and understand as it shows us how the story began. We see that God created all things to be a blessing and humans to be companions for himself. We also see that a curse came to the world through Adam and Eve
by disobedience of the Lord through eating of the forbidden fruit, which intern separated us from
God. Then we see that God made a covenant/ promise with Abraham and his offspring to give them the promised land and make it a great nation. We see that, as the narrative unfolds, that God does follow through with his promise to Abraham and his offspring . Though the journey was not easy nor straight forward, Abraham's people became a great nation worshiping God. In the narrative of the OT we also see the promise of a coming Messiah which will be reviled in the

NT, and we see he will come out of Israel, showing the importance of following the story line and the importance of the promise made to Abraham for a great nation. I conclude that we must recognize this narrative flow in the OT to fully understand how the OT and NT come together (Holy Bible English Standard Version 2001/2016).
