Passage: Acts 19:11-22

1.
The Question of Duty
Acts 19:17 states, "This became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived in Ephesus; and fear fell upon them all and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified." The duty that resonates from this verse is the responsibility to magnify the name of the Lord Jesus. Just as the name of Jesus was magnified in Ephesus, we have a duty as believers to exhibit and honor the name of Jesus in our lives. Our duty includes sharing the Gospel, living to reflect His teachings, and giving Him the praise and glory He deserves. We should make it our daily duty to glorify the
name of Jesus, recognizing the transformative power and authority it holds. This duty goes beyond mere religious observance, it encompasses a devotion to exalting Christ in all we do.
By fulfilling our duty to magnify the name of Jesus, we align ourselves with the example set in the verse, where the impact was felt not only among believers but also among the community of Jews and Greeks in Ephesus. This duty encourages us to be diligent and intentional in our efforts to honor and exhibit Christ, recognizing that in doing so, we bear witness to His greatness and draw others to Him.
2.
The Question of Character
In Acts 19:15, we see a noticable example of the importance of character. The seven sons of Sceva, who attempted to cast out evil spirits by invoking the name of Jesus, were met with a humbling response from the possessed man: "Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you?" This incident deepens the significance of authenticity and faith in one's character. As believers, we should strive to be individuals whose character is rooted in a sincere and intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. Our faith should not be superficial or a religious facade. Instead, it
should be a deeply ingrained part of our character, such that even the spiritual realm recognizes our authenticity.
This passage teaches us that it's not enough to go through the motions or use religious language without a genuine relationship with Christ. Our character should reflect the transformative power

of faith, and our identity should be rooted in Christ. Therefore, the continuous nurturing and development of our character to align with Christ's teachings, allows our faith to be a defining aspect of who we are rather than just what we profess. This authenticity in character is what enables us to have a meaningful impact on the spiritual realm and the world around us.
3.
The Question of Goals
In Acts 19:21, we read about Paul's clear and unwavering goal: "Now after these events Paul resolved in the Spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and go to Jerusalem, saying, 'After I
have been there, I must also see Rome.'" Paul's goal was to spread the message of Christ to new regions and ultimately reach Rome, a center of influence in the Roman Empire. This passage reminds us of the importance of setting meaningful and God-inspired goals in our lives that align
with our character of living a faithful life. The usage here is that, like Paul, we should prayerfully discern our goals and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit in setting them. Our goals should align with the mission of advancing God's kingdom and sharing the message of Christ's salvation. Whether our goals are related to our careers, relationships, or personal growth, they should ultimately serve the higher kingdom and glorifying God, furthering His work on Earth. As believers, we are called to pursue causes that reflect the love, compassion, and transformative power of Christ. This passage encourages us to examine our own goals and ensure that they are in harmony with God's will, just as Paul's goal was in alignment with his calling as an apostle.
4.
The Question of Discernment
Acts 19:13-16 recounts an incident where seven Jewish exorcists attempted to cast out evil spirits
by invoking the name of Jesus, whom Paul proclaimed. However, the evil spirits recognized that these exorcists lacked a genuine relationship with Christ, and they overpowered and humiliated them. This passage highlights the critical importance of discernment in our spiritual lives.
The application here is that discernment is crucial when it comes to matters of the heart, faith, and spiritual warfare. We must discern between true faith in Christ and superficial religiosity. It is not enough to simply use the name of Jesus; we must have a personal, authentic relationship with Him. In our own lives, we should be vigilant in discerning the authenticity of our faith and the depth of our relationship with Christ. We should also exercise discernment when evaluating

spiritual teachings and practices, ensuring they align with the truth of the Gospel. This passage reminds us that discernment protects us from spiritual deception and empowers us to walk in the authority and truth of Jesus Christ. Therefore, as believers, we should continually seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit to distinguish between truth and error, just as the evil spirits in this passage recognized the authenticity of Paul's ministry.
