Nathaniel Hart Dr. Jeffrey G. Cannon Religion C 225 - Foundations of the Restoration Reading Reflection #7: Gathering Israel and Establishing Zion (part 1) 28 September, 2023 The six documents are revelations from God given to the prophet Joseph Smtih which are now known as Doctrine and Covenants sections 52, 57, 58, 101, 103, and 105. This also notes that not every section of D&C is placed in order of when the revelation came. These revelations were created by god and recorded by Joseph and his scribes. The audiences are faithful members of the Church of Christ and its leaders. These revelations were dictated by Joseph Smith over the following timeframe. D&C 52: June 6th, 1831 in Kirtland, Ohio. This was referenced at a church conference in Kirtland Ohio. The revelation was a commandment for the Elders to move west, two by two, preaching along the way. All the men who had been recently ordained to the High Priesthood were also asked to move west. This was on a hillside where a great number of people attended. D&C 57: July 20th, 1831 in Jackson County, Independence, Missouri. The first revelation in Independence Missouri was given to the Church of Christ. God had pronounced this land as the “land of promise” or “Zion.” Here the Lord’s work of gathering would happen. Joseph received an earlier revelation that the gospel would be preached among the Lamanites, whom church members suspected were the Native Americans. D&C 58: August 1st, 1831 in western Missouri. There were some disappointments and arguments within the early church leadership. The Elders were disappointed that they came to Jackson County with under 10 converts while expecting a fuller harvest. Bishop Edward Partridge, among others, questioned and argued about the underdeveloped land that God appointed to be the “City of Zion.” This revelation from God counseled these weary men into being faithful through much adversity, focusing on the land’s prophesied glory, and commanded the leaders to encourage their families to move to the promised land.D&C 101: December 16-17, 1833 in Jackson County, Independence Missouri. After some time of settling and building the City of Zion, the saints were driven out of their inheritances because of the acting up of their irritated non-Mormon neighbors. The revelation addressed that these saints needed to be chastened as a consequence of their transgressions. It also stated steps to regain their lands such as not selling one square foot, moving out in two phases, and following further direction. D&C 103: February 24th, 1834, in Jackson County, Independence Missouri. Very similar to 101, where there is more counsel concerning returning to Jackson County. The Lord needs them to redeem their land, and His wrath is upon all those who are against God. So JS obtained a small band of 30 members and marched back to Jackson County from Clay Couty. D&C 105: June 22, 1834, in Clay County, Missouri. At this point, it was apparent that members couldn’t enter Jackson County without bloodshed, so God revealed it wasn’t required for members to redeem Zion at this time. He would pour out his own wrath in his due time without measure. Clay county was also called the Camp of Zion. The Saints were counseled to be peaceful with their neighbors even though their army may have been strong enough to redeem israel. They were hinged on God’s will and timing.
