On so many levels, I can relate to Mr. Smithe. When I first started teaching and I decided to use groups, it was a complete disaster. There were so many pieces that I did not think when I decided to do a group activity, that were essential to have a manageable class. The main thing Mr. Smithe has to be distinguished to his students is the difference between “working in a group” and “working as a group”. Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning (Proverbs 9:9).
For this activity to be more successful, Mr. Smithe could give a few essay ideas to choose from and provide students with a rubric. When doing group assignments, a rubric is a teacher’s lifesaver. It includes all of the pieces that is required in the project and the deadlines to have the
project completed. A rubric is a scoring tool that lays out the expectations of a task or assignment across 3 to 5 levels of performance. Instructors use rubrics to divide assignments or tasks into different component parts, with a detailed description of each component reflecting what constitutes acceptable or unacceptable levels of performance (Chowdhury, 2019). With a rubric, this allows students to self-check their work before turning it in and giving them some sense of independency. This helps teachers a lot because most of the questions students would ask is most likely laid out in the rubric. For this activity, I would have provided my students a list of topics to choose from. I say this because, looking at the essay topic given, it is quite broad. My thoughts would have been is there a certain era, they should be looking at. Are there a certain group of people, they should or should not be including? The essay topic is too broad. Therefore, giving the students topics to
choose from can narrow down the topic to what the teacher is asking for. Another suggestion for Mr. Smithe is he could assign roles for the group activity. Each student can write a part of the essay and then everyone put it together. This will help him monitor the students as everyone will be on task doing something instead of sitting there waiting for the next student to finish. References: Chowdhury, F. (2019).
