1 What My Research Taught Me Short Paper: What My Research Taught Me Joshua Ferreira Zanotto Southern New Hampshire University PSY 205 Dr. Darchelle Curry December 17, 2023
2 What My Research Taught Me What My Research Taught Me I did not learn anything new about research. However, I was able to improve my research techniques and citations. Research is critical in psychology and in order to work in the field we must always continue our research. “In psychology, research plays an essential part in understanding human behaviour, and in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorders.” (Black, 2023). The project made me a better researcher by allowing me to research a topic I have not given much thought to. The death penalty is a very controversial subject, while the number of supports has decreased there is still support for the death penalty. I believe it is in place as a comfort to society that for the most heinous crimes. The project allowed me to analyze an article were the data was collected through a survey. I think in psychology surveys are a great tool to understand how people think however, they can be flawed. I believe response bias is the greats flaw in surveys. “ Response bias refers to the ways respondents may be unduly influenced when providing answers on a survey. Bias is an issue that affects the accuracy of the survey data obtained and is the result of participants' inability or unwillingness to answer questions precisely or truthfully.” (EdTech Books, 2020). A survey of people’s thoughts on the death penalty undoubtedly will have response bias. A person in favor of the death penalty might feel they cannot be honest on the survey about their views. The article did make me want to learn more. In the survey the authors conducted they did not directly ask if they participated favor or oppose the death penalty. Therefore, I believe the findings to be flawed in the conclusion. The conclusion states, “The results of the exploratory study did not provide evidence that there exist differences in levels of agreement with statements related to support or opposition of the death penalty when comparing law enforcement majors
3 What My Research Taught Me with other criminal justice majors.” (Sethuraju, Sole, & Oliver, 2016). The survey does not allow for this conclusion to be made. I think researching the topics further and finding studies that as the participants if they favor or oppose the death penalty would give a more accurate answer to if the number of supporters for the death penalty have indeed decreased.
