Initial Post My results from the Clifton Strengths Finder Assessment were exciting and informative. My five main themes seem to be restorative, achiever, learner, deliberative, and responsibility (Rath, 2007). Being restorative means that I want/ need to fix things. When others might be detoured on sighting an issue, I start analyzing the fix. The assessment says I am an achiever, this is one, I have always felt was a shortcoming, but it is a personal strength! I am driven not to compete, really, but to succeed. At everything, every time, every day. That can drive one crazy until one understands it as a personal strength! Research reveals that the high achiever student needs a unique environment to succeed (Lalu, 2021). When a student feels threatened to be prevented from developing their potential, say from unexplainable abstract grading. Suddenly poor grades when all other current grades are very good. That student loses the purposeful drive for achievement. They know the assignment was carried out to the specific instructions yet, they got a poor grade. When this achiever loses forward momentum or does not know how to recover or improve, They are lost. The theme of a learner is so spot on for me! I thought I was a little nuts on this one, and now I know it is a personal strength too! For example, say I am riding down the road with my son. We see minor road work stalled with a tractor nearly on its side in the ditch where they were working. My mind goes to learning, figuring out what might have led to this dilemma. I am speaking out loud for my son to suffer through. He always thought of it as being nosy, I suppose? Like, I am into everyone else's business. Nevertheless, I have to figure things out to learn. A better example is my mother calls, and her little tablet is not doing what it should; I can not get it out of my mind until I learn what went wrong, what setting was changed, and how to fix it and prevent it from reoccurrence. This is not the restorative trait so much as learning the fix for the situation. I am driven to learn it.
The next theme is deliberative. Deliberative involves careful thought and discussion when making decisions (deliberative, adj1, n.d.). To be deliberative is to emphasize logic and reason instead of the power struggle or creativity. This is a very true trait for me. The fifth theme is the theme of responsibility. "Your Responsibility theme forces you to take psychological ownership for anything you commit to (Rath, 2007)." The signature theme report puts the reality in black and white print for me; I am emotionally bound to a task until completion. Quitting is not an option I could settle with; I must complete the task. I am responsible for its completion. Next, I am assigned to discuss two core values that I would like to strengthen based on the results of your StrengthsFinder assessment. Research on core values is available far and wide; I will use Dr. Erich H. Witte (Witte et al., 2020). The article reports on determining the ten fundamental human individual values; "Conformity, Tradition, Security, Power, Achievement, Hedonism, Stimulation (Alteration), Self-Direction, Universalism, and Benevolence." Of these values, I suppose the strengths finder assessment drives me to work on stimulation and self-direction. I hope to aspire to alter things. Never accept that the way I am doing it, or we are doing it, is the best. There is almost always a better way. And self-direction; would be setting personal fitness goals I can stick to as I progress with the general assimilation of the strength finders' assessment reflections. I will discuss two strengths of my signature themes report (Rath, 2007). Now that I see Learner and Responsibility as assets, not deficiencies, I can realize and relate to them in a new light. The learner theme is something that I have always tried to squelch to keep to a minimum, and now, I can let it flow, dig right into it, and enjoy more successful personal growth in these areas. Responsibility is one where I can now stop thinking about myself as a sucker, feeling responsible for everything everywhere. I can now rededicate myself to accepting this as a resource and fully enjoy its process.
Lastly, I am tasked with discussing two personality characteristics I would like to improve and strengthen. According to a dictionary website, there are bright and dark side character traits (your dictionary, 2022). Of course, I will want to work on personal growth in my brighter character traits. I suppose generosity and kindness would be the two to focus on for me. I recently tried to pay it forward to a stranger in generosity and was sorely taken advantage of. I do not want this to limit my response when I have the next opportunity to show generosity. For kindness, I always want to lighten someone else's burdens whenever possible, to commit a random act of kindness daily. References: Deliberative, adj1 (n.d.).
