Unit 2 Assessment – Senses Ronald Campbell Herzing University PS101-8A Psychology Ms. Button 11/26/2023
The sense of smell or olfaction is one of the five senses that involves identifying molecules within the air. Sense of smell is a very complex process that uses sensory organs, nerves, and the brain. The olfactory system is comprised of various parts including the nose, nasal cavity, olfactory epithelium, cribriform plate, olfactory nerve, olfactory bulbs, olfactory tract, and olfactory cortex. The nose is an opening containing the nasal passageways and the nasal cavity which is divided into two parts by the septum. The olfactory epithelium is a type of tissue within the nasal cavity that contains olfactory cells and receptor cells. The cribriform plate separates the nasal cavity and the brain. The olfactory nerve is the first cranial nerve to be involved in olfaction. The fibers extend down to the olfactory bulbs. These bulbs are structures in the forebrain where the olfactory tract begins. This tract is a band of nerve fibers that extend from the olfactory bulb to the olfactory cortex. This part of the brain is responsible for processing information about odors. When it comes to the sense of smell, “the absolute threshold involves the smallest concentration that a participant is able to smell.” (Cherry,2023) The absolute threshold can vary from person to person and vary further depending on the odor. This can further be influenced by humidity and pressure within the air. I chose the sense of smell because it is one that I feel is very connected to emotion. There have been many times in my life when I could close my eyes and a simple smell could take me back to a place of happiness. As a child who grew up in some not-so-good situations sometimes these little flashbacks were the best thing that I had. Transduction is when sensory signals are converted to electrical signals within the brain. It is an important component of psychological processes and is used with all five senses.
