1 Introduction to Psychology Reflection Hannah Shoemake Bachelor of Social Work, Walden University PSYC 1001: Introduction to Psychology Dr. Saeid Atoof October 09, 2022
2 Introduction to Psychology Reflection Over the course of the last 6 weeks, we have been exposed to information varying from human development and the correlation between attitude and behavior, all the way to different psychological disorders and the different branches of Psychology. This course has made a great impact on me. The resource that stood out to me the most was a Ted Talk by Sherry Turkle titled. Connected but Alone?” . Throughout this video presentation, Turkle talks about our connection with others. She explains that people use social media, cell phones, and other methods to avoid direct human contact and confrontation to be more in control of situations and conversations (Turkle, 2012). This stood out to me the most this course because it was one of the only media’s I truly felt connected with and understood the most. Aside from video presentations and media, I learned a lot from the chapters we read. Specifically, the chapters on human development and attitude and behavior. Many things we learned throughout this course I have been able to relate to on a personal level involving my thoughts, feelings, and ideas around how I was raised. I was able to understand a lot from the textbook perspective about my childhood that I had never learned in therapy. For example, I was about to read more about a diagnosed disorder that I currently have, panic disorder. I was also able to obtain more information about my attachment towards others through our required readings and discussion posts interacting with our classmates. We learned that human attachment impacts development and human experience throughout the life course (Kearns et al., 2015). I have an anxious-style attachment towards others. I had learned about this in therapy, but I was able to relate to it on a deeper level reading it within our required readings. Along with this, I was able to recognize and understand that this is a result of growing up in a traumatic childhood without having my emotional needs met.
3 A Psychology Practitioner has and was able to help me understand a lot of these areas in my life. Seeing therapists and psychologists truly changed my life for the better and I will most likely be seeing one for the rest of my life to ensure my medication is still working correctly and I am using the skills I have learned to benefit my life. As I have mentioned previously, I use psychology daily and will continue to do so to help manage my anxiety and to be aware of how my feelings affect my attachments with other people. On a professional level, psychology will always be a part of my daily life as well. My career goals as of now are to become a counselor, specifically a counselor specializing in trauma. Although I am not receiving my degree in Psychology, I will be receiving it in Social Work instead, I will still use many of the same methods, practices, materials, etc. as a psychologist. I am thankful for the material that I have learned and that I have connected to. I feel like I have a much deeper understanding of many of the psychological aspects of my life. The information I have learned in this course will most likely be information that I continue to access and reflect on during my courses to come.
