Week #8 Worksheet This week you will be creating a reference that highlights how the elements of EITHER the structural model or the Bowen model can be viewed from a cultural humility lens. This assignment will require you to creatively think about how parts of the model may or may not fit this lens. This assignment is not a paper, rather a listing of ideas. You can generate complete sentences or understandable “bulleted” lists (just make sure you include enough information so that your professor understands the point that you are making). You may utilize the presented articles here, information outside of this course (including resources from previous courses), or other information/research from the library to complete the document. Note: this worksheet is formatting for you to enter text into the text boxes. Name Alanna Horst Tradition Model that you are using Major goal of the model (summarized in a sentence or two): Calatrava et. al. (2022) describes Bowen Family Systems Theory (BSFT) as one’s ability to maintain their own beliefs, feelings, person, and individuality when in stressful moments while with others. You don’t lose yourself no matter what happens. Major assumptions of the model: Sauerheber et al. (2014) state assumptions of the model are as follows: The family members are connected by their feelings and they impact one another. The ability of a member to remain themselves during stress in intimate relationships is related to their Differentiation of Self. The Bowen Center for the study of family (2021) suggest additional models include: Three people connected helps to diffuse tension. Parents can input their own fears, struggles, and pain on a child and that this only reaffirms the parents’ issues. Sauerheber et al. (2014) share: People pull away when happiness is threatened. People learn how to relate from their own family of origin. The Bowen Center for the study of family (2021) suggest: When in relation to one another a brother or sister was born impacts their lot in life. Each system impacts the other including those in the community.
Looking at the assumptions you listed above; reflect on each assumption and how you feel it fits/does not fit with a cultural humility lens: Hardy & Laszloffy (1995) shares cultural humility comes from looking at families and respecting where they came from environment, ethnic background, etc. and how they identify which is part of systemic theory. Erdem & Safi (2018) share: Who a person is (DoS) is based in their culture, environment, ethnicity and their family of origin, that family’s characteristics (beliefs, feelings, ideas, etc.) will impact how they relate and this affects other members of the family. Erdem & Safi (2018) share how families see their children, how they relate, and the impact on their community is all based on culture, ethnicity and individual characteristics that work and impact greater systems and would require the therapist to be open and committed to learning and understanding culture and diversity needs in families and communities. Erdem & Safi (2018) suggest that part of DoS is learning who an individual is both outside the family and with the family and is part of the growth as an individual. Erdem & Safi (2018) share that BSFT in and of itself was created and applied to Caucasian persons, and has only recently been worked to apply to more cultures. Erdem & Safi (2018) state that the community and ability for DoS depends on the environments expectations of the persons to be together yet apart from their family of origin. Erdem & Safi (2018) suggest that more work needs to be done with differing cultures in order to show how BSFT works across cultures because it is directly related to how a family interacts which varies depending on multiple factors. I do not believe that the three person unit, positioning of a sibling, and removing oneself really fits with cultural humility as those don’t really connect with bigger values, ideals, and the impact of others. How has this model been used (according to the research) to address diversity/difference? (list 3-5 observations) Hardy & Laszloffy (1995) shares completing genograms based on culture is beneficial, looking at the impact of generations within the culture that impact an individual and family can show the perspective therapist the direct influence of feelings and involvement. Sauerheber et al. (2014) detail that part of the work was to view the effects of western culture on a therapists’ involvement with another culture. Sauerheber et al. (2014)
share that a therapist must also consider again the impact of generations of involvement on a family and how over the years their ideals, thoughts and interactions may have been modified from outside influences. Lim & Lim (2012) discuss the impact of modification of each generation on the next as with past relationships both obedience and respect were revered and more modern families spout the importance of respect but not necessarily do as I say. Lim & Lim (2012) ask that a therapist consider in this culture it is about the all, not necessarily the one and how Bowen Systems Theory can still be applied even in that culture. In your own words, do you think this model can approach clients from a cultural humility place? Why or Why not? I do think Bowen Systems Theory can be applied and work from a place of cultural humility once thinking about how the family interactions effect one another and how those interactions were taught from generations of family before. Thinking about the importance of certain virtues and characteristics specific to each culture will allow the therapist to use self-reflection on how their own views impact their acceptance of differing views, a desire for greater understanding and educating one’s self on different cultures in the context of their community and family. A therapist’s ability to remain “self” even when treating others who have less a sense of self should by virtue increase the client’s sense of self, and lack thereof would cause potentially more problems. What are the limitations within this model when viewing clients from a cultural humility place? Erdem & Safi (2018) share that the lack of resources of BSFT applied to other cultures is problematic as it seems that higher sense of self is directly related to better more positive interactions where a lower sense of self leads to more problems. Erdem & Safi (2018) state that sense of self is often based on cultural trends and families where ethnic values, ideals and expectations have been handed down. It seems that in order for BSFT to be effective one must first address their own beliefs, values, and feelings.
