Final Essay 1. How have you grown? I had grown so much from when I first started the class, and I had some experience with Motivational Interviewing. However, I did a few workshops and observed the Motivational Interviewing technique in a group setting while doing an internship a couple of years ago. Therefore, I did not have much hands-on experience. However, after this class, I have discovered that I can be nervous initially, and I tend to think about the process. And if I pay attention and take a deep breath, and focus, I can overcome my nervousness. By relaxing and focusing on the conversation, the client states that I can provide the client's proper feedback is anticipating from our session. After gaining some practice in this class, I got a little more comfortable with the process. I also gained a lot of insight when we did the transcription homework; although it was pretty challenging, I did get a chance to see myself and the areas of weakness and strengths in action. I also realized that I repeat myself a lot and use filler words like "umm," Which is not something I was so proud to see when I watched these videos in our class duration. I was happy it was on the video to see the areas that I need to improve on. I am glad that we did these demonstrations. I enjoyed working with my classmates in this experience. 2.Stronger skills? Name at least two . I think that the first thing that I have a vital skill in as for counseling I think I'm good at encouraging people. And according to the Ivey text, "Encouraging -used throughout the session to support clients and help them provide specifics around their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors."(Ivey et al., p. 180). I think that I am good at encouraging others and making sure that the client understands that I am listening to the concerns that they bring up to me. I also want the client to feel cared for and appreciated. I know how I feel when I feel valued and cared for by someone. And that is how I would like my clients to feel. Another strength or vital skill I think I have is reflecting feelings to the client accurately. According to the Ivey text, "Identify the key emotions of a client and feed them back to clarify affective experience. With some clients, the brief acknowledgment of feelings may be more appropriate. Affective empathy is often combined with paraphrasing and summarizing. Include a search for positive feelings and strengths."(Ivey et al., p. 155). In my time as a counselor in our mock session, I think the reflection of feelings I had done this step better than I anticipated.
3. Which skills have room for growth and how do you plan to develop these skills? Name at least one. I
