Week 6: Filial & Play Therapies Danae Riley School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Northcentral University MFT-6104 v2: Family Therapy with Children Dr. Chisato Hotta December 7, 2022
Filial & Play Therapies Play therapy is a method used primarily with children ranging from age 2-11. This mode of therapy is used because children within these age ranges are still developing verbal and cognitive processing capabilities and play therapy encourages expression of emotion using techniques like play or art which are more developmentally adaptive and inclusive for all members in the family. Filial therapy is inclusive of the practices of play therapy; however, filial therapy is conducted by the parents who act as a therapeutic agent working directly with their children to engage in more empathetic connection and overall improved familial relationships. The main difference between play therapy and filial therapy is the person conducting the session. Filial therapy training is typically conducted in a group session over a 10-week timeframe where weekly training is done with a play therapist and the techniques learned are practiced in designated play sessions and supervised/critiqued to drive success for future child interactions. These therapeutic methods allow for full families to participate in therapy together while all being able to contribute their emotional perspectives using developmentally appropriate communication techniques. Using a CBFT approach, I would highlight interactional patterns that are currently inhibiting the positive strengths that their family has and encourage the parents to identify positive strengths within their family and their child in particular that they could focus on for future relationship development and growth of trust and connection between the parent and child.
