WEEK 3 ARTICLE CRITIQUE 2 Week 3 Article Critique This article critique analyzes Personality Assessments and Adolescents: Challenges and Guidelines. The article was published in Adolescence in the Fall of 2008 by Tony D. Crespi and Natalie N. Politikos. It focuses on the potential difficulties of administering and interpreting personality assessments in adolescents and offers a set of guidelines practitioners can follow. Introduction and Problem Statement The articles begin by addressing the vast array of problems adolescents commonly experience and point out that over 4.5 million children and teenagers in the U.S. suffer from some kind of emotional disturbance and that there is a large subset of the population that is not having their mental health needs met. From there, they acknowledge that this would seemingly show the need for tools like personality assessments to be administered to these children and adolescents to identify potential problems before they become too severe. However, the authors then discuss the challenges of using these kinds of assessments with adolescents and why they might not be as reliable or effective with this age group compared to administering these tests to adults. They state that teenagers are still developing their individual personalities and that there has not been enough research to determine what kinds of personality assessments are best for use with an adolescent population. Finally, they go on to offer guidelines on the ethical and effective use of personality assessments with this age group, including the use of multiple methods of assessment, taking the child’s age and development into account prior to choosing an assessment, and ensuring that cultural differences are considered. Major Strengths of the Article This article offers a very comprehensive overview of the nature of assessing personality in adolescents and why potential challenges exist. The authors address the need for mental health

The guidelines that are outlined in the article are also a great resource for practitioners and serve as a jumping-off point for anyone considering using personality assessments with this age group. Major Weaknesses or Gaps in the Article The most glaring weakness I see in this article is the lack of information on specific assessment methods and instruments of personality assessments. While a comprehensive review of multiple different kinds of personality assessments would likely have been unnecessary, an analysis of one or two different assessments, their use with adolescents, and potential problems or inaccuracies that might occur while using them with this age group would have added a lot to this article. This could have given some additional context to the arguments that the authors were making. Two Future Areas of Research Future research in this area could include an analysis of different modes of personality assessment and their use with adolescent populations. Research in this area could definitely build off of the research from this article and could lead to better use of personality assessments with adolescents. There could also be additional research into alternatives to the current commonly accepted personality assessments that would work better with teenagers who are still developing their personalities. Conclusion This article does an exceptional job of identifying the unique challenges of administering and interpreting personality assessments with adolescent children. The authors effectively show the need for better mental healthcare among this age group while also acknowledging the
