PSY-357 Lifespan Development Observation Activity For this assignment you will complete a 30-minute observation of a developmental group. Select one of the developmental groups we have studied. Conduct additional research to become familiar with the developmental period you will be observing. The setting of the observation should be a structured (daycare, school, etc.) setting, if you cannot find a structured setting, please notify your instructor. Remember, you must obtain permission before scheduling the formal observation. During your visit, fill out the following information. Name of location The Church Prep Age of the individual observed 12 months-24 months Developmental period of observed Infancy and Toddlerhood Identify the individuals who interact with the observed (teachers, parents, caregivers) Volunteers that are caregivers and certified teachers. Describe the interactions observed (both positive and negative) Children were in the 1-2 year old room during Sunday service. The room has a small slide, two child-size tables, a playhouse, and cubbies with toys set up Montessori-style (on display). Because the room is decluttered and the classroom offers activities rather than toys, the children spent their time going down the slide, playing in the playhouse, and eating snacks at the tables. There is no screen time and there are very few toys. The toys that are there are interactive that teach fine motor skills. Because the children have less opportunity to get overstimulated from screen time, bright colors, or clutter, they play well together and there was not much crying. They focused on playing with each other and interacting with each other. Describe the cognitive characteristics Cognitive characteristics include throwing a ball. There were also a basket of babydolls. One little girl took them out and laid them to bed back in the basket. There was a wooden shape sorter toy that a little boy was playing with. Around 18 months, toddlers form a sense of self and have the ability to see themselves as separate. A lot of children in this age group cried when their parents dropped them off to go to their church service. Describe the physical Many of the toddlers are starting to master their physical
characteristics skills and fine motor skills. The younger children are just learning to walk and aren’t as skilled. They fall down more often. The older children are very skills and rarely fell down from walking. The older children found it easy to sit in a chair, climb the ladder to the slide, and participate in the playhouse. The younger children had a hard time using the slide and would rather stand by the table. They also would go into the playhouse, but didn’t interact much. Describe the emotional characteristics Toddlers form strong emotional attachments. They were upset when being separated from their loved ones. However, once their parents left they were very independent when playing. When multiple kids would try to play together, it sometimes resulted in conflict and their would be an occasional meltdown because the toddler wanted to be independent. Also, many of them carried around their sippy cups because they have an emotional attachment to it. Describe the social characteristics The children were civil in the presence of each other. Occasionally there was a small quarrel when a toddler wanted a toy that someone else had because they do not know how to share because of their sense of independence. The other toddler would also cry because they are trying to be independent. A few of the older children that know how to talk would say “mine” and the other one would say “no” because they were trying to be independent. Observation Report In 500 - 750 words, summarize what was observed using at least 1 peer reviewed article. Include references formatted in the APA style. Physical skills and fine motor abilities are already being acquired by many young children. Children 12-24 months grow at their own pace. They grow their first set of teeth and by 24 months, they also have molars. Children at this age learn to think and develop memories. Children also understand symbols, develop an imagination, and pretend play. Toddlers start to form emotional attachments to loved ones but are also independent. Toddlers understand more words and start to speak. Lastly, children develop fine motor skills and as they start to age up, they start to perfect walking, running, climbing, and jumping. Parents can help their children get through these stages by allowing safe exploration and helping them with their confidence by being patient with them. Also, children get overwhelmed and confused at this stage which can lead to occasional temper tantrums. Growth and Development, ages 12 to 24 months .
