Executive Summary for Youth Project Maenell Hendricks JFK School of Psychology and Social Sciences, National University Course code: MSW-6003 Dr. Valerie Radu August 13, 2023
Executive Summary Violence against children and adolescents is a serious public health issue that has an adverse impact on young people, households, and communities. For young individuals aged 10 to 24, murder is third among the top causes of mortality. Around 14 young people pass away from homicide every single day, while greater than 1,300 people need treatment in emergency rooms for wounds caused by violence (CDC, n.d.). Despite these horrifying figures, it is still feasible to stop teenage violence. Phoenix Consulting Group is composed of four federal divisions and three state government entities that promote youth-focused initiatives. The company was established as a freelance life skills training company in 2014 by Maenell Hendricks, which consists of teaching young and older adults how to repair and/or rebuild their credit, employment skills, emotional intelligence, and mock interviewing. As Ms. Hendricks began to observe the behaviors of the youth, she noticed that the level of youth violence and murder rates were beginning to rise higher than the prior years. Many life skills programs are not transformative, and results may vary for someone with an Ethiopian background versus a person with a Honduran background (Schmidt, 2021). To avoid the misconception, it is best to perform communication style and personality trait assessments to get to know and understand who the audience is. The statistics in this realm motivated Phoenix Consulting Group to develop a program to offer the youth from under-resourced communities life skills training, but on steroids, which is where the Voyage of the Phoenix comes in. Since businesses now want employees with certain life skills, especially leadership, interpersonal relationships, time management, resolving problems, and collaboration, it has become more difficult to get into the employment market (Nair & Fahimirad, 2019). Many of our youth lack social, interpersonal, self-identity, innovative, problem solving, self-building, and critical
thinking skills. In addition, they lack empathy and managing emotions and stress. The mistreatment and courtesy wheels, which emphasize a positive attitude toward conflict resolution alongside cognitive rewiring, solving issues, and motivating techniques, are the program's primary treatment idea (Gilman, 2020). The program's underlying philosophy is therapeutic, in which adolescents are educated to notice the consequences of their behavior on people and to remove harm ((Gilman, 2020). The Voyage of the Phoenix program will be a 12 week program and will consist of 35 – 40 under-resourced participants. There are similar programs, however, they tend to only scratch the surface of the issues and interventions. The Voyage of the Phoenix program will be a more in- depth process where participants are guided step by step to ensure that they are getting what they need from staff to increase their well-being by the end of the program. Over 12 weeks, participants will go through a course to help them understand what life skills mean and who they are, learn self-identity skills, decision making skills, peer competency to enhance their communication skills, cognitive skills, self-building skills, identify personal strengths and weaknesses, engage in critical thinking/conversations, develop and increase empathy, learn preparation skills for employment (resume, mock interviewing, etc.), and strategies and methods to cope with stress and conflict. The participants will take what they’ve learned and incorporate the skills in one on one exercises, mock interviews, simulations, public speaking exercises, and in focus group sessions. In addition, the teachers of the participants will provide weekly reports on academic progress and behavior. With lack of accessible resources and reductions in budget, inter-agency partnership is extremely significant. The participation from the community leaders, local police officers, social workers, and public speakers will be all volunteer work. The community leaders will be teaching the

participants about community leadership. They will learn how to organize a youth leadership program. The executive director and program coordinator will facilitate the life and employment skills sessions, and the exercises. The social workers will work with the youth on building self- identity, resilience skills, and conduct one on one sessions with the participants. A retired police officer will provide the lectures, hold civic engagement sessions, and the public speakers will teach participants on building confidence in public speaking. From research and collaboration, we believe that the Voyage of the Phoenix program will increase wellness, positive behaviors, confidence in oneself, relationship-building, decision-making, influence youth leadership, and decrease the level of violence. The cost to implement this project is $26, 200, of which $7,000 of the budget has been committed from the municipal government and corporate/business sponsorship. Your $19,200 commitment will provide us with the funds that we require to properly conduct this pilot program, and our team is delighted to work with you. Thank you for taking the time to examine our request.
