Emily Dinette Topic 8 – Altruism and Cooperation Prosocial Behavior This assignment contains two parts. You may type directly into this worksheet. Part I: Random Acts of Kindness Foundation Website Visit the website of The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, an organization dedicated to altruistic pursuits. Review the information, literature, and downloadable documents, then in 100- 250 words answer the following two questions. 1. What is the purpose of this website/movement? The purpose of the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation is to implement acts of kindness into every environment whether that be workplaces, schools, or homes. The foundation aims to make kindness a social norm by promoting kindness towards others through their content. The website offers to teach children social emotional skills in which all of their content is free and easily accessible. There is a section on the website which allows people to share their stories of receiving or showing kindness to others. 2. What story or stories influenced you the most and why? I was most influenced by the story, “Parent/child time: Acts of Kindness that can go a long way”. This story promoted parents being influential and teaching their children the importance of kindness and ways to show kindness so that the children can impact others and start a ripple effect where others will them also behave like them and show kindness. Teaching children kindness and the importance at a young age is essential to their development as they will then grow up with kindness being a fundamental aspect of their day. The story emphasized that young children are influenced and learn their morals and values from whoever raised them. The parent role is so important because they are teaching their children how to make the world a better place and implement positive behaviors into their children as well as positive self-esteem. Part II: My Prosocial Day Design your own assignment in which you implement five acts of kindness (prosocial behavior) or an entire DAY of compassion and kindness. Use your discretion, common sense, and modesty at all times. Do not put yourself in an environment of potential danger or harm. Answer the following questions, one paragraph per question (100 words minimum) will suffice 1. Describe your implementation of kindness: what did you do, how did you approach the idea, where did you implement it and to whom?
For implementing kindness, I went to the store and got a few packs of water as well as candy canes and went around my school and handed them to the homeless or people standing at the corners of the street. Due to the holiday season, I got the candy canes to make people smile, but I also got water as we live in the desert and most of these people are either homeless or have unfortunate situations, so water is always good for hydration. When I was at any stoplight, I would hand both out and wish people a Merry Christmas around Phoenix. 2. Describe the reactions you perceived from others and yourself. I received only positive reactions and thankful reactions from others. Regardless of any reactions, I was still going to give people water and a candy cane and wish them Merry Christmas. Everyone was very kind and they wished me well too. While I was not able to offer much, the people that I did were so kind and loving and appreciative that I took the time to bless them. They also blessed me as I find joy in hearing from others and helping and I had a lot of fun being able to give something festive to people to help them forget about their situation even for a few seconds. I was reminded of how fortunate I am for the life that I have and the family that I have and to love others because you may never know their situation. 3. Describe what you learned about prosocial behavior from this exercise. Compare the actual application of the behavior relative to this topic material (hint: may want to integrate text info here!). Prosocial behavior is the behavior of having concern or care for the rights, feelings and welfare of others. I have learned that prosocial behaviors can be motivated based upon how individuals were raised. For me, my parents raised me to have a care for others and give to others constantly so that I was humbled and always finding ways to bless others. Due to this, going out and finding ways to connect with people or bless them comes easily to me because of what I grew up doing. 4. If you are a faith-based person, explain how your faith helped you implement your helping behavior. If you are not a faith-based person, explain what philosophy, belief system, or values you connected to helping behavior. Cite a source to support your answers (from the GCU library, the Bible, or textbook). I am a faith-based person. My faith has helped me implement my helping behaviors as Jesus is kind and helped anyone he interacted with. While there are Bible verses stating to love your neighbor as yourself, I personally think of how much Jesus has done for me in my life. If I am so blessed within my own life, why wouldn’t I go out of my way to bless others and share love and hope. Even when I feel alone and have a lot going on in my life, community and loving others fills me up and reminds me that I am not alone and Jesus loves all of his people. I think in society we tend to be very materialistic and think that things will solve an issue, but I know that having a relationship with Christ fills my life more than any material could, which is what I want others to feel. That no matter the situation, people can feel overwhelmed with love and hope because they have a relationship with Christ.
