Unit 2 Journal The family environment can greatly affect the behavior of children both positively and negatively. Key factors that can influence these behaviors include household chaos, parenting styles, and social media use. Each of these factors has an effect on the way a child will develop and their behavior as they age. Household chaos such as disorganization and hurriedness has been shown to negatively affect a child’s development and well-being (Emond, 2020). Development can have a direct effect on behavior. Parenting style is another factor that can affect a child’s behavior. Positive parenting styles and attitudes can help to promote positive child development (Sabat et al, 2021). Research on social media use within children has begun to increase with the advances in technology use in families. Certain internalizing behaviors that include depression and anxiety as well as risky sexual behaviors may be related to excessive use of social media use in children and adolescents (Emond, 2020). An organization in my community that provides socialization programming for children is Pediatric Psychology Associates. They offer a program called SURF Group. SURF Groups works to help children and adolescents foster successful peer relationships, develop social understanding, as well as improve perspective-taking and social skills (Pediatric Psychology Associates, 2023). This program can help to promote resilience within the entire family because not only do they work with children and adolescents, but they also have group therapists who are available for consultation to help with work on other areas such as behavior and parent guidance (Pediatric Psychology Associates, 2023). An intervention that the organization could use to promote socialization and positive behavior in children while also promoting family resilience is family therapy. Family therapy can
definitely help to promote resilience. Family therapists can help families discover paths of resilience and help to employ strengths they otherwise may have been aware of (Hawley, 2020). Not only will it encourage positive communication between the family members, but it will also help to address issues and barriers within the family. References Emond, J. A. (2020).
