You will first review the various psychological disorders that you’ve learned about in the course and select 3 disorders to focus on for this assignment. Using a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences per bullet for each psychological disorder, respond to each of the rubric criteria below to structure your blog post. Support your answers with credible sources when appropriate. Blog post headline: [Insert text] Three selected disorders: Panic disorder. Anxiety disorder. PTSD -Post traumatic stress disorder In your own words, identify and describe the main diagnostic features of each of the disorders selected. Panic disorder- Attacks that come and go with concerns of having another one that last longer than a few months. Some of the symptoms include accelerated heart rate, sweating, shortness of breath, losing control, and discomfort. Developing abruptly and usually reaching peak intensity within 10 mins; the attacks often subside in 20-30 mins and rarely lasting more than an hour. (Hooley, 2019). Anxiety disorder- A disorder that is similar to a panic attack that causes uneasiness with constant worry. Some symptoms include restlessness, fatigue, muscle tension, sleep disturbance and irritability. Worry about a number of different events or activities, and its content cannot be exclusively related to the worry associated with another concurrent disorder, such as the possibility of having a panic attack. (Hooley, 2019). PTSD- Someone who has experienced a traumatic event. Some symptoms include nightmares, anger, possible threats, and re-living the event that caused the PTSD to occur. Traumatic stressors include combat, rape, being confined in a concentration camp, and experiencing a natural disaster such as a tsunami, earthquake, or tornado. These are all terrible experiences and, as would be expected, stress symptoms are very common in the immediate aftermath of a traumatic event. However, for most people, these symptoms decrease with time. (Hooley, 2019). Consider biomedical factors: Describe what it means to characterize the disorders as “diseases of the nervous system and the body.” 1
PTSD, anxiety, and panic disorder are characterized as diseases in the nervous system and the body means that they affect the nervous system and are reflexes that are not learned. Consider clinical factors: Describe the similarities between the disorders selected. In what ways might these similarities impact diagnosis and treatment? The similarities between PTSD, anxiety, and bipolar disorder are the inability to control and stop the actions that follow the disorders. They are not able to stop thinking or feeling the emotions or thoughts. Many individuals can suffer from depression with these disorders. Consider historical factors: Describe the ways deinstitutionalization has impacted patient rights, levels of care, and access to treatment of the disorders over time. When deinstitutionalization and closed hospitals moving the patients, it affected the treatment they desperately needed to receive. Most patients now do not have the means in receiving the proper care needed and have to find it on their own or they don’t receive it at all. For example, PTSD individuals are in charge of finding their own support groups and help. Most could end up in jail or still undiagnosed and suffering. Consider sociocultural factors: Describe the social and cultural changes that have caused shifts in the public’s perception of the disorders over time. The public’s perception is still shifting and struggling to understand these disorders. Most of the public may understand and others do not and see it as someone just losing their mind. With more of the public speaking about it and understanding even though they still struggle, are now more places to reach out understand there are now more places to reach out to for help. Part Two For Part Two, choose 1 disorder from the 3 you discussed in Part One. Respond to each of the three questions in a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences. Support your answers with credible sources when appropriate and address the rubric criteria. 2
One selected disorder: Anxiety disorder Consider the mind-body connection: Describe whether a discernible bidirectional relationship exists between the disorder and physical illness. If so, explain. I do believe there is a discernible bidirectional relationship that exists between anxiety and physical illness. When an individual is having an anxiety attack, they start having sweats and a pounding heart rate. Patients with a lifetime anxiety disorder reported higher rates of several medical illnesses than did persons without anxiety. Anxiety disorders were associated with a specific pattern of cardiac disorders, hypertension, gastrointestinal problems, genitourinary difficulties, and migraine; individuals presenting with anxiety disorders or medical illness need therefore to be evaluated carefully for comorbidity. (Harter, n, d.) Consider the impact of language and messaging: Describe how the words we use (e.g., in casual conversation, in media communications) when discussing a disorder influence our willingness or ability to manage the disorder. The words that are used to describe and discuss anxiety disorders can impact those individuals that are suffering from this disorder and can determine if they are comfortable enough to share what they have. If these individuals were to hear someone discussing negatively about an anxiety disorder it could end u making that individual have on because this causes an uncomfortable situation of fear Consider the effect of lifestyle choices: Describe the small, but significant, changes in attitude/behavior we can make that could help us to manage the symptoms of the disorder. Practicing self-care can really help manage this disorder and being able to understand the signs when an attack may be happening or starting to happen and manage to breathe through the attack. When people are around those who suffer from this it is important to understand what can trigger an attack. Harter C. M. , Conway, P. K., & Merikangas, R. M. (n.d.) PubMed.
