Activity #5 – Developmental Decisions Parents face many decisions when trying to make good choices about how to handle various developmental dilemmas. I want you to pretend to be a parent when contemplating these issues. Choose one of the scenarios below and then use your book, PsycINFO, Google Scholar, etc. to learn more about research in this area. Find at least two sources that provide you with more information on the topic (one source must be from a reputable peer-reviewed journal, but you are free to use any sources you find as long as they are credible and accurately represent research on the topic) and complete the items on the next page. Topics 1) Your 4-year-old is obsessed with planes. This interest seemed to start when she was 2 and you visited the Air and Space museum. She only checks out books about planes from the library, only wants model planes as presents, and asks to go to air museums for all vacations. Should parents be concerned about young children’s obsessions (i.e., intense interest in trains, dinosaurs, princesses, etc). What does science say about early obsessions? Should you encourage or discourage such behavior if your child begins to show intense interests? 2) Your 3-year-old has started telling you about her new best friend Sophie. At first you think this is a new friend from day-care, but soon your daughter is asking you to set a place for Sophie at the dinner table and buckle Sophie in to the back seat before going to the store. You quickly realize Sophie is imaginary. Should you be worried? How common are imaginary friends? Is your daughter at risk to have social or developmental problems later? 3) You just found out that your 5-year-old has been diagnosed with autism. You have no idea how to handle this news and you are waiting to be referred to a specialist. What does science say about how to help a child with autism succeed? What are your first steps as a parent? 4) You just found out that your 8-year-old child has been diagnosed with ADHD and your pediatrician wants to prescribe him a stimulant to help treat his symptoms. What does science say about ADHD treatments? Do you decide to put him on medications? 5) You just found out that your child is being bullied at school. She informs you that two other children have verbally and physically assaulted her. What does science say about how to help your child handle bullies? How do you handle this situation? 6) You just found out that your child is a bully at school. The teacher informs you that several children have reported that your child has verbally and physically assaulted them. What does science say about how to parent a child that is being a bully? How do you handle this situation?
Developmental Decisions 1. What developmental decision did you choose and why? (~1-2 sentence, 2 pts) a. I chose the 3 rd developmental decision because a lot of parents do not actually know how to deal with autism. 2. What were some of the most important things you learned/what are some valuable insights you gained? (~2-3 ideas/sentences, 2 pts) a. I was able to learn about what the diagnoses criteria for autism are. I also learned how a parent can do to help their child that is being diagnosed with autism. 3. What would you tell parents who are facing the same dilemma about what you learned? How would you advise them to proceed based on what you learned? (~2-3 ideas/sentences, 2 pts) a. What I learned the way that I can help other parents is by telling them to be positive because that is what a child would respond best to. You need to have a lot of patients because children that have ASD take a longer time processing thing. There are days where your child is going to answer you a way that you don’t like to be spoken to but all you really can do is be persistent but resilient. 4. Provide the APA formatted references you used (include authors, year, title, publication). You must include two references, one research study or journal article and one additional (credible) source. (2 references, 2 pts) a. Interacting with a child who has autism spectrum disorder . Interacting with a Child Who Has Autism Spectrum Disorder - Health Encyclopedia - University of Rochester Medical Center. (n.d.). Retrieved March 31, 2022, from https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/encyclopedia/content.aspx? contenttypeid=160&contentid=46 b. DSM-psychiatryonline-org.ezproxy.library.unlv.edu . (n.d.). What is something you learned or something you are thinking about differently after this activity? If you are working in a group, each group member must address this question individually. Please provide your names too. (~1-2 sentences, 2 pts) a. One thing that I learned is that parents that have children with autism also need time to take care of themselves. This is a way for them to take a break which is okay, they
will ask understanding friends and families if they can take care of your child while the parent is able to recharge.
