A summary of the characteristics of one of these disorders as defined in the DSM-5-TR or other research. (Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder ADHD) ADHD is characterized by a pattern of behavior, in DSM-IV, symptoms will be divided into two categories: Inattention Failure to pay close attention Difficulty organizing tasks and activities Hyperactivity/Impulsivity Excessive talking Fidgeting Inability to remain seated in appropriate situations Criteria: 1. Are present in two or more settings. 2. Interfere with everyday functioning. 3. Rule out other mental health disorder.
4. Were evident before age 12. The most important diagnose for ADHD is to rule out not only mental health disorder but other items to think about. 1. Immaturity : Children do not act their age. They are expected to know to behave when they enter school. This is can be due to inexperienced parents, economic status, and late bloomers. 2. Food Senitivies: A study conducted in the Netherlands and published in the Lancet Journal found that 64% of diagnosed cases of ADHD were actually caused by a hypersensitivity to food ( Reiner, 2019 ). ADHD. Parents and teachers should figure out ways to use the excessive energy in positive ways. 9. Vision Problems : If a child cant see he/she will get frustrated and start to act out-still not ADHD. A recent study performed at the University of Alabama in Birmingham and published by the American Academy of Optometry revealed that kids with vision problems that cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses can be at increased risk for ADHD (Reiner, 2019). 10. Learning disorder :Dyslexia/Discalcula (the number version) Difficulty reading can lead to restless behavior when a child focuses attention on everything except the book they are supposed to be looking at. Frustration about being unable to complete tasks like other children can also impact concentration and behavior (Reiner, 2019). Describe some of the concerns children and their families may encounter from a systems perspective due to the disorder . A concern for families is that the child will be labeled ADHD for the rest of the school years. Most parents do not want their child to be called the "troubled or bad kid". Teachers play a massive role from the systems perspective because parents rarely question them. This is true with pedtrictric doctors parents do not question because they are to know what is best. Ultimately, parents are the ones who should advocate for their child. However, in order to this with ADHD is to learn then to find resources.
